OFITG :-D :-D :-D But Hey bet it was worth it. I now have a microwave recipe but still have to beat it.

The surprising thing is my family, all Scottish, go mad for it but all their partners who are English can't stand the stuff say it's too sugary (It is too) but Good..... the sweet tooth of the Scots raises it's ugly head me thinks :-D

We were up home a couple of weeks ago came home laden with Tablet, Scottish rolls and Snowballs silly really it cost a fortune for the Tablet and I can make it any time I want ....By the way OFITG the beating is the answer for real Tablet so don't skimp on it I can sometimes beat for 5 mins. :-)

A recipe for traditional Scottish Macaroon Bars

This recipe will make about 12 bars depending on what size you make them

Ingredients

Cold and thoroughly mashed boiled potatoes (1½ heaped tablespoons of mashed potato per bar)
Icing sugar - amount needed will depends on how stiff your mashed potato is
2 teaspoons of vanilla essence
8 oz Melted chocolate for coating
1 Cup desiccated coconut

Cook potatoes in boiling water for 20 minutes before mashing.
Toast desiccated coconut on tray until golden brown.
Melt chocolate slowly in a pan stirring constantly to prevent sticking.
Mix potatoes with icing sugar enough sugar to make the mixture firm.
Chill, then roll out to ¾ inch thick and cut into bars.

Coat the bars with melted chocolate and cover with the toasted desiccated coconut on all sides.

Allow the bars to cool before eating (bars must be eaten within a couple of days of making them - orherwise they will go off)

Yes Paula, I know tablet, I've got Mum's recipe somewhere, probably the same as OFITG's.

I don't think I've eaten tablet since I was 20!

I remember Lee's Macaroon Bars....... do they still make them? I heard they were made with mashed potato :-S

OFiTG .... My OH is borderline diabetic so we are very careful with our sugar intake, he does still have a sweet tooth though., so I am like the sweetie police. :-D

I find tablet far, far too sweet and sickly. It is also very rich and I daren't think of the calories in just a small piece.

I don't like Scotch pies either, but I do buy Tunnock's tea cakes and sometimes caramel wafers. OH likes them.

Something else I like, which is now beginning to find its way south, is Border biscuits. They make a lovely chocolate coated ginger variety.

Paula+ I used to have, but my diabetes put a stop to that, and as the years have passed my dentist has left me with no teeth :-D :-D :-D

LadyScozz - the only thing that I think that can improve on a Scotch Pie with chips and beans is, two Scotch Pies with chips and beans - scrumptious :-D
