Archduke Ferninand was assassinated. The heir to the throne of Austria & Hungary was shot in Sarajevo. An earlier attempt to bomb his car failed after the Archduke threw the bomb out of the car.
The assassination triggered the start of The Great War.

I have been listening to a very interesting programme radio 4. It said that the assassin is more famous to the people of Sarajevo than Archduke Ferninand

I think that the first day of the Battle of the Somme was the day that most people have died in any battle.
