You wouldn't dare to leave a book lying around on the fire station, some wag(?) would always tear out the last page. Bob

Oh!! I didn't realise the comments were of the type you've mentioned Wisechild....that's terrible, and how juvenile to write things like that in books.... especially library books FGS :-S

Oh daft me wisechild, I forgot where you are!

When I was last in Malta in 2007 they had a Lira shop but were going over to Euros the next year and that would work out more than a Lira, wonder how they did it, I must ask my friends lol

The pencilled gloss of other readers in the margins of academic books is supposed to add to the academic experience or something like that.

Must be a pain in it when you find them in fiction though.

No problem with notes which have obviously been used for research purposes.
What annoys me is comments like "Oh what a naughty girl" or "It was probably the next door neighbour" or "She´s pregnant"
I can usually work these things out for myself, but prefer to read the book in it´s original state, without the asides.
We don´t have shops like Poundland here. I´m sure there are Spanish equivilents, but I find reading a book in Spanish too much of a challenge, so rely on 2nd hand English books.

:-) Chris...it's even worse when you start to recognise the hand writing in the margins.(library)
And think...OMG I seem to have the same taste in books as that nut job.

:-S

I must read a different class of book as despite getting most of them from charity shops I have never found this.

Poundland sometimes have some good books and they are new.

Even worse when they do it in library books. Errors/punctuation all marked. If in pencil I erase them.

I can only imagine the previous owner was perhaps studying the book and making reference notes for an essay or a report.
Must admit, I've done the same with my own books when studying.....my notes are always in pencil, I hasten to add.

That must be so frustrating!! Why can't people just enjoy a book, instead of analysing it :-(

I did it once, to Schindler's list, but I was at Uni, was ill, and had to write an essay on it, I just didn't feel up to writing 'proper' notes. Pleased to say, I got 85% for that essay :-D

Could be worse they could right across the page 3/4 of the way through the book "The butler did it!" ;-)

Why do people do that? What's the point? :-S

I am an avid reader & have loads of books on my tablet, but they don´t compete with a real" book so I haunt 2nd hand bookshops.
It makes me so cross when I settled down to read my latest purchae, only to find that a previous owner has added thier own comments in the margin for page after page.
Anyone else get annoyed by this??
Particularly annoying in thrillers/detective stories. :-| :-| :-| :-| :-|
