Just an update having rung Argos - it's definitely a scam, as I knew really, just had to be 100% sure.
Doubt they'll ring back, but if they do, I think I'll tell them I work for the ID fraud squad!

About 10 minutes ago the 'phone rang...

Hello......... a few seconds of silence (guessed by then it was a pest)

Hi..... as a customer of ??? Airline (garbled, I couldn't understand the word), you have been randomly selected to receive $900 off your next trip. Press 1 for more information.

No I didn't press 1, and I'm not being taken for a ride.

Our last flight was in February last year!

I a while back I had two texts about the same thing from Argos saying it was ready to collect....cant remember what it was though.

I tried to find the store number but they want you to use a 0845 number, so left it

This store was in the Liverpool area and I'm in Essex so was not mine...reckon it was a mobile number taken down inorrectly

Thanks for the replies everyone.

supercrutch (!) that is brilliant.

The 2 numbers do come up when googled - the one they rang from has various complaints about incessant calls (nothing to do with Argos).

The number they gave to ring back also has one complaint, saying Argos is charging a lot to customers who are paying by phone.

Has that person been misled I wonder! I have checked the Argos payment number online, and it is the same EXCEPT for the last digit.

Interesting that isn't it.

If you have the number you were called from just stick it in google and if there is anything dodgy it will appear like magic ;-)

That is strange because i got an email from (supposedly) Amazon today and i do use them quite a lot, but they were asking me what i thought about a book i had ordered and i had not ordered said book so i just deleted the email.

You never quite know If these mails or phone calls are a scam..

Friend a while back got a call to say someone had ordered top of the range TV and used her card this was to be sent to London could she verify the order of course it wasn't hers but at least they were keeping an eye on fraudulent purchases and as she uses them a lot they noticed it was a strange address so well done Argos. At no time did they ask for any private details.

I ordered something recently from Argos, and they texted me the delivery time.

When I ordered something years ago, before I had a mobile phone, they phoned me on my landline to tell me the delivery time.

When I (accidently) forgot to pay one month, for something I'd bought using my card, they phoned me, confirmed (told me) my Argos card number and what I'd bought, asked me to confirm my address, and said I could pay the month I owed then with a card, or send a cheque.

At NO TIME did they ask for my DOB!

brummiejan Report 1 Jul 2014 22:12

I know. I do have a card, but have not ordered anything and my account is clear. In any case, what kind of company would ask for your DOB before anything else?

I am not sure Argos would even know this anyway, thinking about it!

Nope, sounds like a scam doesn't it.

I think I shall do that, thanks for the advice! Always good to highlight this kind of thing to the company involved anyway, isn't it.
Might tell them to go forth & multiply if they call again - though I suspect they won't.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 1 Jul 2014 21:30

What does everyone think?

There was a phone call for me yesterday, purportedly from Argos, but I was out. They asked my husband to instruct me to ring them back, but left no contact details, so obviously I didn't!

They then rang back this evening at 8,55pm, (no phone call all day, so presumably this is not urgent). They got my 1st name slightly wrong (Jane rather than Janet) and asked for my DOB 'for security'. Well, no, I don't think so.

So the caller asked me to ring Argos, but to do so by 9pm as that is when the offices shut. I checked the Argos contact details online, and their numbers do not correspond with either the number given or that from which this person rang.

Now, call me suspicious, but ... ! :-D
