remove power cord
try power on
result - no - check for loose battery as above
yes
does anything at all display on the screen ?
no - dead
yes - either you will get some kind of message that it cannot mount the hard drive OR you will get the initial loading screen and then it will fail to complete boot
if no HD reported try removing it and putting it back. You will need some little screwdrivers which are sold in Maplins.
still no HD ?
it will have to be replaced
if the windows loading screen appears but boot does not complete then the HD is damaged. Usually data can be recovered by putting the HD in a 2.5in holder and accessing it from another pc using USB.
replace the drive.

It is very unlikely that the laptop is dead.
It is very likely that you will have to replace the HD. As most PCs are not supplied with bootable media AND most users fail to create such when they have the chance chances are you will be shelling out to the OEM or Microsoft.

Always make sure that data on notebooks is backed up in real time to a USB device or the cloud. They are made to die or disappear.

Worth opening to check a memory card as not popped out of the slot, just make sure you touch something earthed a tap or radiator valve to discharge any static before working inside. Unless you have one of those geek bondage wrist straps!

I've tried plugging it in. I get a message saying it is trying to repair itself. Then it switches off again. :-(
I've not used my desktop in ages. Windows just installed over 40,000 updates. :-0

RSPCL has been contacted!

But, seriously, a lot depends on how it landed. Flat may be OK, but side/corners can be a problem.

Mayfield just reminded me...
I had similar thing with my new laptop, not dropped, but failed to boot up.

Solution was :... I took out/disconnected the battery from Laptop then replaced it back again.

Whoopee!... A result.
It had just received the kiss of life. :-D

Have you tried using the mains adaptor in case the battery is dislodged or damaged?

Oops!

Would it be covered by your contents insurance? If not, you could get a specialist to look at it, just in case it can be easily fixed.
