Lots of things have happened on the 1st of August in years gone by:

100 years ago the first shots were fired in WW1 when Germany declared war on Russia.

In 1798 Lord Nelson almost completey destroyed Napoleons fleet in the Battle of the Nile.

It was on this day in1834 that slavery was abolished in the British Empire; resulting in over 770 thousand slaves gaining their freedom.

In 1774 oxygen was discovered by Joseph Priestley. I bet he was able to breath a little easier after that. ;-)

The foundation stone of the Bank of England in Threadneddle Street, London was laid today in1732.

In the Mood became a big hit for Glen Miller after being released on the 1st of August 1939.

Herman Melville was born on the 1st of August 1819.

Queen Anne died exactly 300 years ago today.
