see in this morning's paper that they are now denying that they knew he had Down's, but had been told that he would only live a day at the most because of the heart condition.

Allan

I agree wholeheartedly with what you say :-)

GlasgowLass, Sylvia,

The thing that got to me about this story was that two people could be so callous as to chose one child over another.

If this had been a normal birth, without the surrogacy issue, the 'natural' parents would have to accept both children.

Children are not commodities to be bought or sold.

How many years ago did someone say "Suffer the little children....."?

Yes, I know that there is more to that statement than I have chosen to post, but it always seems to be the most vulnerable who suffer.

Wars, famine, trophy children....

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now

GlasgowLass ..................

as I understand it from what I have read in the media online, tests done in the early months ............... possibly the scan at 2 -3 months that showed she was having twins ALSO showed that one of the twins was Downs ....................

the couple seemingly then said that they did not want twins, and they did not want a child with Downs, and kept pressuring the surrogate to have an abortion

It is one of the abnormalities that can be spotted on the scan .................. when various measurements are taken.

Jem,

That bit (about the child abuse) broke overnight on Monday (WA time)

Yesterday, the press were all over the place :-|

Having read this story, I spotted something that didn't quite add up.

It says the parents asked the mother for a termination of the child with Downs?
How would they have known that the child had an extra chromosome before the birth?

Every pregnacy carries a risk of Downs Syndrome
Blood tests on the mother "may" show an increased risk of Downs Syndrome( an increase above the normal for the biological mother's age) but can only be confirmed by an amniocentesis after 15 weeks gestation.

My niece has a child with Downs, her blood tests were normal, and showed no increased risk.
Aged 23yrs her actual risk of a Downs child was 1 in 1425... her baby was the 1

It has been on the news in this country too.

Not about the child abuse however.

Poor Children :-( :-(

Sue, the Thai authorities are now threatening to take action against the surrogate mum as she accepted payment for the surrogacy.

Apparently, under Thai Law, that is considered to be human trafficking :-S

Very messy, and two innocent babies' lives could be ruined before they've even started

Very worrying. I do wonder if the young Thai surrogate mother is hoping to make some money out of this :-(

It highlights the danger in surrogacy although I know a couple who have two little girls with an Indian surrogate mother and it has worked out very well.

Hello Sue :-)

There definitely is :-|

At the moment it is a case of "he says, she says"

I'm not sure that whether it is a good thing or not, but now all his neighbours are aware of his past.

Like any town, we have our fair share of 'vigilantes' :-(

I saw Bunbury mentioned in a news item and thought of you Allan. I think there is far more to this story than a couple deciding to abandon the little boy with Downs Syndrome.

Ah well last year it was the explosives and a potential terrorism case and now it's a tragic case of a surrogate born in Thailand for a Bunbury couple.

The father has served two prison terms for child sex offences.

His name is mentioned in this article and has been broadcast on TV and radio. This has happened as so far the couple have done nothing wrong :-|

WA Social Services are currently investigating.

You can't move in South Bunbury for the wall-to-wall media traffic
