Got my thinking cap on-

ABER (in Welsh) means Mouth of River.
FOYLE could be a variation of the Welsh word MOEL, which when used after Aber, mutates to FOEL, meaning bare or bald.

BET YOU ALL COULDN'T WAIT FOR ALL THAT, COULD YOU? :-D :-D

Is Aberfoyle on an estuary with a sort of barren landscape?

Yes you are quite right Barb- it does sound welsh.

That's cos the both languages originate with the Celtic Language. Scottish and Irish split one way. Welsh and Cornish the other.

and g,dau has just arrived in Gartmore ABER foyle
