I kept my appointment this morning with the doctor, full MOT, he has no doubt the lump is a small hernia, he said I also have a bad chest infection (I thought it was just a summer cold) and said that my coughing may have caused a small tear in the abdominal muscle.

He has prescribed two types of antibiotics for the chest infection and said that as the coughing eases, the hernia will probably pop back in of its own accord, I have to go back and see him in two weeks.

Have to say I wish I had gone to see my doctor when I first noticed the small lump - could have saved myself a lot of worry.

Very pleased to read your update OFITG, I kept my 'good advice' to myself :-) I thought you'd been given enough ;-)

Hope you feel much better now you know and that the antibiotics kick in soon :-)

I have a hiatus hernia caused by a coughing fit ten years ago. I actually felt it pop out. It was diagnosed by an endoscopy. Ten years on it's controlled perfectly well by medication. Three doctors have all said they won't recommend an operation because it's major surgery. As it doesn't bother me as long as I take the tablets - Lansoprazole - I'm inclined to agree with them. Let's hope yours behaves itself and pops back where it belongs.

2 years ago OH at 74 then went to the hospital specialist with a groin hernia. specialist said, it isn't big and it isn't bothering you so we won't operate. Never sure though if they say this because of age.

Thanks everyone - your thoughts and encouragement were much appreciated <3

I have had so many things diagnosed over last 10 years and had developed an aversion to going near the doctors, maybe today's appointment has let me put my demons to bed, and in future I will not be as reluctant as I have been in the past to visit the doctor - I know, go on say it - Silly Old Fool :-D

So pleased you went and got sorted out, OFITG, now get your chest infection cleared and wait for the hernia to go, and don't be afraid to visit your doc when you have any concerns. It's much easier than having us lot nag you, isn't it lol?

Take care of yourself and keep talking to us,

Lizxx
