I'm against hanging but I make an exception in the case of Jimmy Saville - though I wouldn't hang him by his neck :-D

Today all killers receive kinder treatment.

She knew what she was doing, the debate is whether she was in her right mind when she did it.

Today women who kill their abusers receive much kinder treatment at the hands of the law, or should do.

I think she very much knew what she was doing at the time
and hanging was the punishment of this country at the time
though I do think hanging is barbaric

but that doesn't mean
I totally disagree with capital punishment in other forms

its a shame Myra Hindley missed that punishment :-(

I'm only going on the legal papers, Joy. I think they are likely to be accurate.

I'm not sure that her being a prostitute is relevant, prostitution is legal. Blakely thumped her, she miscarried. She was likely to be suffering from post miscarriage depression.

Why is the fact that Cussen was her boyfriend important? He drove her to the place and gave her the gun, whatever his status was.

Today she wouldn't be convicted of murder in the first degree, let alone hanged for it.

Guinevere she had an abortion not a miscarriage
or was that the third pregnancy
and David Blakely was engaged to somebody else at the time

Ruth's boyfriend at the time was Desmond Cussen

as she was also working as a prostitute it could of been anybody's baby

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 13 Aug 2014 09:37

She shouldn't have been hanged.

She refused to appeal, although her legal team had several good reasons to appeal. Wiser legal minds than mine think she wouldn't have been hanged if it had gone to appeal.

"Solicitor Bernard de Maid said: 'The judge and jury in the original trial did not have the full picture. If they had known the full story, Ruth would not have been convicted of murder and she would not have been hanged.'

Ten days before the killing, Ellis had suffered a miscarriage after Blakely, the baby's father, punched her in the stomach.

The legal team has evidence that Ellis was suffering from postmiscarriage depression at the time of the shooting.

The lawyers claim her solicitors in the original case were negligent and also say Ellis was further provoked by another of her lovers, Desmond Cussen, who was jealous of Blakely, a racing driver. He gave her the gun and drove her to the pub where the shooting took place.

They say Ellis was also physically and sexually abused by her father and was beaten by a former husband."

I watched a bit of that programme, re Timothy Evans. As in that case and others there is always the possibility of an innocent person being hung ( even in spite of the advances in forensics imo) , and even if there wasn't I would still say no, I don't think anyone should be executed, then or now.

Maddiecow Report 12 Aug 2014 22:52

A Boro girl, Ann and a stray Kitten at last a few familiar names in a thread...... I was beginning to think there were No familiar names about this year. And yes she did, but it was a crime of passion and one could almost say manipulated.

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 12 Aug 2014 22:48

Did she shoot her lover in cold blood?

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 12 Aug 2014 22:38

An interesting question and one I argued a lot as a teenager, but I am a lot older now and more open to other points of view. But no, she should not have been hung. However the death penalty is a very emotive subject and can bring out some very strong views.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 12 Aug 2014 22:33

don't think anyone should be hung - always think of poor Timothy Evans who was hung for the murder of his wife when it was Reginald Christie all along - and Christie was the prime witness for the prosecution - the Rillington Place murders

imagine being hung for a crime you didnlt commit

Kay????

JoyBoroAngel Report 12 Aug 2014 22:16

In the USA they still execute females and males :-(

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 12 Aug 2014 21:58

Capital Punishment has been debated on here before, but in answer to your question.....

No - Ruth Ellis should not have been hung.

State sponsored execution can never be right in a civilised society.
