Just checked - I have Recent Members Connect dated today, haven't noticed any earlier problems - that's using IE10 on Windows 7

Unfortunately or fortunately I don't have a laptop!

Methinks a visit to spend money on a new laptop may be in order. Oh dear, I will have to go shopping !!!!! ;-) :-D

Well.I have downloaded Firefiox and still can't get the 'recent member connect activity' on ancestry. Have written to them but not hopeful of a reply. Anyone else had thhis problem?

Phyll

I downloaded Firefox about 3 years ago

I still have IE on my computer ................... but I now never use it.

It is so slow compared with Firefox, and just does not do the job to my satisfaction any more.

I do have to go back to it every now and again to check on a site I ahd stored in My Favourites ................. I get the link, go to the site, and then Bookmark it on Firefox.

BTW ....................... my computer dates back to 2003 :-(

I do have a very large memory to it, but it has not been updated since that time.

I'm on my 3rd monitor though

Thank you all for your invaluable help. I have to say I am still in a quandry about which to use but will have a look at them all.
Whatever I choose will I lose my IE for other things or can I just use it for Ancestry?

Firefox is not a good choice on an old computer because it uses a lot of CPU and RAM. ie it is slow. The upside is that it is ez to use for those used to IE.

Chrome is quick on an old machine. The downside is that the user interface is a big change for those used to IE.

Opera is quick on an old machine and is easy to use. Downside slow with multimedia eg YouTube while Chrome is fast.

All are free to download. Make sure you go to the main site and not some pirate who will charge and include adware.

All can import bookmarks from other browsers.

ez.

Having just read your explanation about Firefox etc., I am none the wiser, you could be speaking a foreign language.

I get very frustrated when trying to sort things out on the computer. I am not stupid, but am not very interested in the technicalities etc., just want it to work.

And I am sure that I am not alone here. ;-)

20 years ago a lot of people insisted that they would never ever use Windows they liked DOS. As for the internet who needed it when Compuserve and msn were available?

A bit later ... who needs internet broadband a 56K modem does just fine.

And so on. It was ever thus right back to the first wedge of cuniform punched into the clay. What is the point of writing when nobody can read ?

have a nice day

:-|

Some people are not "Tech" minded at all and with regards of being left behind is easier said than done in some cases.....

Phyll I hope you can get it sorted....I personally would try firefox, especially if Ancestry is something you enjoy doing.....

Ancestry works fine on XP/VISTA with any of Opera, Chrome, Firefox.
If the machine has only 1GB RAM then go with Chrome, Opera or PaleMoon ( a version of Firefox ) as full Firefox is a bit of a memory hog.

There are "skins" for Firefox which give it the look and feel of IE if you like that kind of thing.

Firefox & Chrome are as prone to picking up malware as IE Opera is better.

Given the security issues, especially for non technical people, it is time to leave XP & VISTA behind. Well over a year ago I posted that now was the time to get hold of Windows7. The only way now is via eBay etc. Windows8 has been tamed - more or less - but will not run on ancient hardware very well if at all. Windows9 looks promising.

You can also consider running Linux - Mint for instance can be run from a DVD or USB key ( leaving yr Windows untouched) and has a version of older low powered machines. Free.

Don't complain about changes in Ancestry and other applications as they evolve with a changing internet. Those who don't keep up are forever left behind.

I use Firefox almost exclusively now

I find it very easy to use

You just have to remember that "Favourites" in IE is "Bookmarks" in Firefox

I found IE 11 useless for ancestry.....copying and pasting gave big gaps on here when trying to help others and when doing my tree I could not enter new family members manually had to use my phone or tablet which was chrome

now using firefox on laptop....but mainly use tablet now anyway.

Kense Report 18 Aug 2014 21:56

Ancestry recomment IE11, Chrome or Firefox, so there shouldn't be any problems using one of those browsers.

If Rollo or Errol is around they can probably explain the differences.

Phyll

Phyll Report 18 Aug 2014 21:49

Thanks KenSE

Probably will use Firefox. It's just that I don't really know what's what with these systems. Will it cause anything else to be lost?

Kense

Kense Report 18 Aug 2014 21:41

Phyll, like you I have an old PC which runs Vista and IE9. It doesn't seem worth upgrading to Windows 8 just to use IE11, when I shall probably need a new PC in a year or so.

What I shall do is to use Firefox when using Ancestry.

It is easy enough to install, just takes a few minutes. You don't have to make it your default browser, but you might find you like it better than IE.

Edit
Apparently not compatible with my system

BillinOz

BillinOz Report 18 Aug 2014 21:23

Upgrade to Explorer 11. ?

Phyll

Phyll Report 18 Aug 2014 21:19

Apparently I will no longer be able to see Members connect on Ancestry as I have internet explorer 9. What do you reecomend I use instead. If all else fails will not renew subs next year. Why do these sites keep messing about with things.

Thanks for help
