OneFootInTheGrave Report 23 Aug 2014 13:33

Theresa May the Home Secretary has said, in a article in the Daily Telegraph, that new powers to tackle extremist groups are being brought forward by the government - sorry but haven't we been told this before.

In February 2011 the Prime Minister David Cameron made a keynote speech on radicalisation and extremism and how it should be dealt with. In 2013, after the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby, the Prime Minister set up a group of experts tasked on advising the government on how to tackle extremism - to date many of the recommendations they made have yet to be implemented :-(

Personally, I am having some difficulty trying to understand why, the Home Secretary has written this article, we have heard it all before. Does the UK not already have various laws that could be used to deal with the banning of extremist groups, radicalisation, and restricting individuals travelling abroad - for example it has been known for football hooligan to be rounded up and their passports taken away to stop them travelling abroad to a football match.

It may be the case that some new laws are required, that said, should we not also be making sure that the existing laws are enforced - the only reason I can think as to why the current laws are not being enforced is that - there is a fear this will alienate certain communities or cultures, is that a reason not to enforce the law :-S

Please note, this is not a thread about the current situation in the Middle East, it is about enforcing our current laws - thanks.
