I only use comfort 'pure' conditioner.

Many years ago, when I worked in a school, I dreaded the children whose mothers' used Ariel washing powder - it meant an instant runny nose! :-|

Goodness knows what these highly scented 'flower' conditioners are like. If I wear a perfume, I don't want competition from a fabric conditioner!

The room air fresheners are the worst!

I bought a "sea breeze" one.....and got a terrible headache. I binned it.

My mother was very fond of Taboo perfume...... another one that gives me a headache. I had to 'phone her and ask her not to wear it if I was heading to her house. She forgot on one memorable occasion...... picked me up at hospital, a two hour drive... by the time we got home I couldn't see.

A neighbour of mine, where we used to live, objected to the washing powder I used, said it made her sneeze... I used Radiant..... switched washing powder and she still complained.... even when I used the same one she did!

Get a teenage boy to sleep under it for a month, that should do the trick ;-)

Am I the only person who opens and sniffs any possible purchase of a new fabric conditioner?
Some are OK, but I avoid the highly scented ones.

One of the reasons I do use conditioner, - in a very dilute mix, is that it helps avoid ironing, so money spent on fabric conditioner, - I buy several when they are on a special offer, does away with time and money spent on ironing.

Since Asda discontinued their own brand, I been opening and sniffing all the bottles on the supermarket shelves
So far, they all smell strongly of... something I dont like!

I used to do the school run when the girls were young.
There was one child in the back of my car, every day and the scent of Fab Cond was really overpowering
Being trapped in warm car, full of kids and the sickly smell was the worst thing ever!

I do realise that I am over-sensitive to sweet smells but the headaches they cause can be crippling.

GlasgowLass ~ I've been on migraine medication for years. I don't normally get headaches with them, I get the blinding "flashing lights". The medication keeps it at a low level, but when I get a bad one I have to go to bed, in a dark room, with a wet cloth over my face.

I wonder if they will ever make a fabric softener with NO smell? Or do they have to add perfume to cover up the stink of chemicals they use?

If you live in a soft water area,there is no need for fabric softener.
I noticed such a difference when I lived in London where I had to use it,but here in North Wales it is unnecessary .
I couldn't drink a cup of tea in London either without filtering the water,left a scum on top.

Brenda, I really notice the difference betwen the soft water we had in Wales and here in Shrops', it's very hard here and ruins the kettle.

we use fabric softener ............ we don't have a dryer, but our clothes are hung on lines in the laundry area to dry.

It does do away with static cling in clothes :-)

I have to say that OH now does all the laundry (and house work) ............. and I can tell when he has tipped a little too much softener into the dispenser.



I find the liquid conditioner to be preferable to the sheets that are put in the dryer ............. they seem very strong to me.




Daughter has an skin allergy to fabric softeners and most detergents and powders.

She lives about 5000 km away, and so always stays for several nights when she visits.


We have to re-wash the sheets. pillow cases and towels that she will be using in plain hot water with 2 rinses, and repeat the wash / rinse cycles 3 or 4 times before hanging them to dry.


She does have a wash powder at home that is OK for her, and has been known to tuck a little bag of it in her suitcase.


I don't think she has stayed in a hotel or B&B for several years ......... although she can usually stand 1 night without too much angst.

I have washed grandsons jumper x 2 with extra rinse both times.

it is now on the wet washing line having a naturla rinse + + + +

Hoping that this will get rid of the (head-ache and sneeze inducing) pong!

Have head somewhere that it can take 7 + washes to get rid of all the chemicals and smells of fabric softner or perfumed washing powder, before it will stop causng these problems plus eczema.

P.S. I don't use air freshners either.

that number of rinses is basically what we have to do when daughter stays ................

our machine has a 2 wash + 2 rinse cycle


times 3 without powder or softener

means the things go through about 12 lots of water .................. hot in the wash cycles and cold in the rinse cycles
