Thelma I think the problem you may be having is because yours was a gedcom from another source and not from an FTM upload to ancestry

Mine downloaded ok and very quickly but the ancestry tree was also from FTM earlier version

Margaret
I am useless with a computer but two years ago I signed into Ancestry and transferred a Gedcom from Genes.NO problem.
The problems arrived when I got FTM 2012 which is supposed to synchronize with Ancestry. Two years on and it still wont so I gave up and only use the online tree.

Oh dear.....Thank you IGP & Shirley.... I was going to upgrade in 2008 but then health issues got in the way...2011 same... so now have a big task by the sounds of it.... Last time I upgraded Comp from 2gb basic to XP I just put the original disc in & pressed whatever! & it did it automatically. going from XP to windows 7 was hoping would be the same, but seems not.... perhaps a visit to PC World or similar is called for.
Tempted to put my head in the sand & call in the professionals.

No I do not have ancestry unfortunately

Thank you all for your help.......

do you have Ancestry?

You can upload your tree to Ancestry then after loading up the new FTM on the lapptap it gives the option to download your tree from Ancestry .

I have the 2006 FTM and the download converted it t the new FTM 2012 version on the laptop putting it in the right format

I was impressed as didnt want to have to redo the tree or take a chance with the memory stick version

Also be aware that the latest version (FTM 2014) has moved on a lot from the version you have. The program was entirely re-written around 2009 and has had several more upgrades since then. So, hopefully, a pleasant surprise.

Thankyou Susan & Bob...I have taken a copy of all my works word info to external hard drive( my passport) but not yet tried the FTM so that will be next & go to there.
Just a bit hesitant about the FTM because that does not have paper back-up.Not being very computer savvy I get very nervous about some things. Ok. Sounds like a Get the grandaughter over job. Thankyou...

I think you WILL be able to, BUT trying to read the latest versions by your older versions wont work...........

ie a modern version back-up disk won't work on your older pc.......

You should be able to, but once converted it cannot be reverted.....so just in case....make copies of the gedcom file.

A Deluxe edition software is exactly the same as an ordinary edition.....the deluxe part gives you extra CDs or a few months extra on ancestry.

Advice needed please......

I have a FTM Deluxe edition .c.1993/4 on my desktop.c 2003 xp.
Both old ladies that have & for the most part still serve me well.
I think I would find it easier to put new version on more uptodate Laptop.

If I buy an uptodate version of FTM & put it on my laptop will I be able to transfer all info to new version. Would hate to have to type it all again... Thank you
