With no income and half a floor sanded my trusty Bosch orbital started messing about on me, sparking, changing speed.

It looked like the brushes had gone to me but what do I know and nobody repairs them any more so, as the floor needed finishing, I bought the new super- dooper model with interchangeable platens.

Well, whereas me and my old Bosch could tackle anything we were given, this new one is more Chad Valley than the dependable Bosch I am used to. Gutless in the extreme!

Our mate has had a look inside the old one for me and verified that I was right and that it was the brushes and, joy of joys, he has tracked some down for six quid.

If it works and I have my old sander back I think I might use this new one as a manicure implement!

Bosch, Black & Decker sell toy stuff that looks nice and is not too heavy. If you have a real job get real tools eg Makita, de Walt. good luck

Sharron - let's hope your old machine will be OK once the the new brushes are fitted - then you will be up up and away :-D

are you trying to do this job with a hand sander? surely not it will take for ever, use a ton of sandpaper while leaving the floor uneven. Rent a proper floor sander it doesn't cost a lot.

I did it with a belt sander a few years ago but the wheelchair took all the varnish off so I am just giving it a bit of a skim and re-varnishing.

A belt sander is perfectly adequate for the job and far less aggressive than a drum sander. The builder next door did his with a belt sander.

I really don't have enough sanding to warrant spending out on de Walt or Makita, much as I would like to own them.

The half a room that is done is well worth the effort.
