Slugs, like everything in an ecosystem have a role. They are composters so break down vegetation, and they are also a source of food for other wildlife. There are approximately 30 species of slug in the UK and there are four main pest species that are native to the UK. These four pest species cause approximately £8 million in damage to vegetable crops each year. On average a UK garden is home to over 20,000 slugs and it is estimated that an acre of farmland can support over 250,000 slugs.

Slugs move in rhythmic waves by contracting muscles on the underside of the foot. At the same time a layer of mucus is produced that helps to smooth the slugs path across the ground. This mucus is also used as the slugs navigation system, as slugs will find their way back to their tunnels and feeding sites by following their mucus trail.

I wonder if there are any of these slimy creatures in Westminster ;-)

Slugs must have been put on this earth for a reason - the answer eludes me at the moment.

Surprised they are not on the endangered species list with all these tales of extermination. And no, I don't want your slugs on my patch - just in case the idea crossed your mind. I have enough of my own already.

SOS - 'Save Our Slugs'. :-)

We have had ginormous ones in the garden, sort of yellowy tan coloured, but I have been scooping them up and sticking them in a tub of water, which started to smell awful after a few days.

I go out on slug patrol every evening unless it's chilly cos they stay hidden then. I will get rid of the beggars somehow, horrible things.

I thought all slugs were cannibalistic. Well they are in our back garden but they`re not that size though here, more like up to 4" may be the odd one a little over that.

Giant cannibal slugs from Scandinavia are invading back gardens in Cambridgeshire.

The molluscs, which can grow to up to six inches long, appear to be resistant to slug pellets.

Gardeners and allotment holders have complained that the creatures are devouring their prized plants.
