I was searching for my Great Grandad on Ancestery.com and found that he served in WW1 which was amazing to us, as no one knew. I then decided to try Genes Reunited and have found nothing on him....why? :-(

Amcestry have a tie-in with the National Archive for the WW1 surviving war records. If you search on there you will automatically directed to Ancestry to view them.

You may find that his attestation form is on GR. On the other hand the full service records, of which that would be the opening page, may be amongt the 60% which were lost in WW2 bombing.

As Hayley said, WW2 records aren't on line - you have to apply for them from the MOD.

You do have to consider that GR and Ancestry use different transcribers. Consequently there could be errors made at that stage.

If you want specific help, even if only for a second pair of eyes to search GR's records, repost on Find Ancestors specifying only GR results. If you could copy and paste the Ancestry results, it would help members find the GR alternative.

I have my father's WW2 records. You can buy them for £25 if you are the next of kin.

We had to pay £30 for OH Father's WW2 records.
