I was wondering if it was something he misheard many many years ago but had never bothered to find out what the real words were because those work perfectly well.

My drinking stopped when I realized that everybody had heard 'The Black Velvet Band' all the way through too many times.

has any one heard this song before
asking because the old man use to sing this all the time
when he was young and drunk LOL

we had a BBQ Saturday old man got drunk and as usual started to sing it
we tried Google but could not find it any were

so now wondering if it is some think the old man made up in his young drunken days
