Can anyone help with this please. I have just been given an old photo and am trying to put an idea of a date to it. I have a lorry with a numberplate JD 2789 have googled various sites and the closest i can get is between 1903-1930 would anyone else have any knowledge on this matter.

many thanks

Not too sure when the year actually became part of the lettering system

I think originally they were just numbered. And the letters were more to do with the area in the country.

I know many years ago, I worked with a bloke who could tell by looking at any number plate where in the country that car was originally sold.

You could try googling

the early history of number plates in the UK

you will get lots results, but you will at least learn about when all the different systems came in.

There is a book (not expensive) advertised on Amazon, might be useful.

or possibly try your local library or old book stores, you never know?
....Sorry I can't be more helpful

Long shot I know, but if you can identify the make of lorry try searching for vintage vehicle forums they may well be able to nail it for you.

The first two letters will just be the registration district so not much help.

first car I had was a 1935 Morris 8 - reg no: TG 9044 [TG was a Cardiff reg] - but same kind of set up as the one you're looking for - eg - 2 letters and four numbers

It looks as though LCS wasn't formed until September 1920.

My 1959/1960 AA book says JD is West Ham Borough Council, so that narrows it down a bit more.

Somewhere I have an ancient AA book as Andy's Mum mentions, I used to look up registrations when on long journeys to stop myself getting bored (before I learned to drive, my partner of the time was the driver)

Even now I see some older reg. and know where they come from.

JD was the base id for London,
councils had a third letter at times to make the reg's go further
my dad had a motorbike FJD 661.

East Ham had 'HMxxx 'HJxxx

strangely enough the mayors car for Peterborough appears to have an Essex reg

Thanks everyone for there responses.

The picture i have is of a coal lorry/truck with two men in the picture. I was just seeing if i could get to as close as i possibly could in working out how old the men could be. As they lived and worked in Fulham, London would be the right id.Cant see what make/model the truck is got sign writing on it London Cooperative SocietyLtd.
Thanks again everyone.
