He had not been too good for a few years, following a stroke.

Very sad to hear this.

We saw him in An Inspector Calls about 10 years back. He was a very good stage actor, and was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, I believe, along with June Brown.

It will be sad news for June Brown especially who was a close friend as well as his screen wife. I saw a programme about her where she went to visit him at his home, he was a poor old thing then and his wife was exhausted looking after him. I hope his passing was gentle and he will now rest in peace, to be mourned by all who knew him privately and through his work.

Rest in peace now, John, no more suffering.

Sad news.

I met him and Nicholas Lyndhurst were making a training film for Royal Mail at the office where I worked. He was a lovely man. Did not really see that much of Nicholas other than to say hello.

My condolences to his family and friends.
