I'm afraid they're not the Aurora Borealis - far too busy! Possibly a meteor shower, coloured afterwards to look spectacular.

They can move, but not in a disco ball manner!

Hi Gwyn and Maggie :-)

The solar eclipse in 1999 was eerie. We didn't get to actually look at it as we didn't have the special glasses. But it suddenly went darkish. The birds stopped singing and the silence felt creepy :-D

It was a bit weird. They were very low, but apart from an alien invasion, they could only have been the Northern (southern) lights! :-D

Jemima

My grandson and I used to go out watching the 'showers' or eclipse and the like.
It would be easier to find a suitable place now, as some street lights are turned off earlier.

Maggie
You give me hope that I'll see this sometime then.
It must have been a really eerie sight, but I'm glad for you that you had a chance to show your daughters.

I've seen them in Winchester, Gwyn
Must have been over 20 year ago - but definitely saw them! Recognised the pattern etc from seeing them in the Shetlands.

Wondered what the 'green hue' was behind the houses opposite - went on the bridge over the motorway and saw them. I dragged the girls out of bed, as I thought it would be the only time they'd ever see them.

So would I Gwyn!

We always go out to see any phenomena, like meteorite storms, Lunar Eclipses etc!

Last year, OH, myself and our then 14 year old Grandson, were sitting in the car park of a local beauty spot at 2 am, in deck chairs with flasks and a picnic, when the police turned up wanting to know what we were doing! :-D

Watching the Perseids was our answer! So they joined in!

No one bothered us this year!

Possibly may be viewed from Scotland and northern England tonight

I'd love to see that, but am too far south.
