you must appreciate that after placing meat at something like -18 to-20 deg c into a small microwave it becomes a self contained fridge for several hours, I am talking from say 11 pm, overnight. till 8 am....

a chicken crown is a chicken breast, as I understand it....

and my self defrosting fridge contains other foodstuffs

What's a chicken crown?

Why put them in the microwave to thaw naturally?

I believe that's one of the dangerous ways to defrost chicken, at room temperature.

you leave them in the microwave overnight?

hmmmm........ been nice knowing you Bob <3

I usually buy chicken crowns, in bulk for the freezer, they are placed separately in Ziploc bags, with some suitable herbs and frozen on day of purchase.
when required for next day, still in their bags placed on a plate in microwave to thaw naturally overnight.

That was a joke, by the way. Bob

Someone told me that you can keep a chicken in the freezer for a couple of years and it will be OK. The one I put in died after a couple of hours. Bob

TBH ..................

I don't trust the cold water method!

wisechild Report 14 Sep 2014 05:43

I always use Dizzi´s method. Put it through several changes of cold water.
Our microwave is very basic & doesn´t have any specific settings.
Defrost is just that & I don´t entirely trust it.

Not really on the topic...but for some odd reason my mother (born Canada 1912-parents both from England) used the term "un-thaw" .(to mean defrost)

My brother and I were waaay older than we should have been before I asked that crazy question ..."If you're unthawing something doesn't that mean that you're freezing it.?"

Not too bright!

I always defrost chicken (and other meat) in the microwave.

I haven't poisoned anyone yet.

It's safer than trying to cook chicken that isn't fully defrosted ~ that's dangerous!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Sep 2014 00:26

All microwave cook books that I have ever seen all tell you how to defrost chukcen ( :-) EDIT:- chicken :-) ) in the microwave

it is perfectly safe ................ as long as you do not leave it lying around on the kitchen counter for any length of time before cooking it.

I have often defrosted chicken breasts in the microwave and, when on a diet, I cook them in there a well to have with salad

We defrost chicken in the microwave several times a week, legs, wings, thighs, breasts etc . In fact our microwave has a chicken defrost setting - you just key in the weight and it works out the time.

Done this way it is always slightly under defrosted so best to do it half an hour or so before you need it. Problems arise when the meat starts to warm up in the microwave as this is when any bacteria present starts to multiply.

Same applies to all meat but as chicken is more likely to be infected with bad bacteria such as salmonella you have to be more careful with it.

No it was raw chicken.
All the advice I have ever seen is that it´s quite safe to de frost most meat in the microwave, or even cook from frozen, allowing extra cooking time, but chicken should always be de frosted in the fridge, thoroughly, before cooking.

What nonsense! I defrost everything in the microwave. My microwave has different settings for defrosting chicken, beef or fish. One just has to enter the weight.

Kense

Kense Report 13 Sep 2014 15:51

It's OK to use the microwave as long as you don't let it get warm and you cook it immediately after defrosting.

Defrosting in the fridge is safer.
