I have been there Bob. We took Fred there and I am glad we did. They have a destroyer(?) there that is the same as the one he was stoker on in the Russian convoys.

My interest is particularly in mediaeval shipping and I am very excited by the idea of being able to see a reconstructed cog. If somebody has reconstructed a hulk as well, then my life would be complete!

Do I sense the thought 'Get a life woman!' forming in your mind?

Sharron, I suggest that you visit the Historic Dockyard at Chatham. Go early though, as there is a lot to see. You can re-visit on the same ticket for 12 months if you don't get round it in one go. Bob

All the details and how I will get there, tell you about it when I get back ?

It is only kind of formulating in an unused part of my murky little mind at the moment.

Still not sure about the tunnel, not with my claustrophobia!

Would you go via the Tunnel or ferry from Dover?
Both fairly easy.... I'll wave to you~~~~

Either way there's a Bronze Age boat in Dover you could view for good measure. Not the right era, but interesting nevertheless.

Everybody on here has a deep and abiding interest in mediaeval shipping now don't they?

No, thought not.

Well, we have never ,ever, driven on the wrong side of the road legally and we have been toying with the idea of taking my Smart abroad at some point, for the experience.

There are a couple of places I think I might like to go, and if I want to go there he has no choice!

One of them is Guedelon in Burgundy where there is a mediaeval manor house being authentically built. The bricks are made on site and run up in baskets which are also made on site.

The other place I had been thinking about was Bremerhaven where the Bremen Cog is preserved. That is a 14century ship that sunk as soon as it set sail and was preserved in mud.

This morning I discover there is a reconstructed cog in a place called Kampen, not a very long way out of Amsterdam. A whole ship you can get on and explore.

The pictures on line are marvellous and I want to go there. IN A MINUTE.
