I dropped a candle down the loo just as I flushed it (bathroom light blown again) earlier this year . So far - no blockage, BUT my house is 6ft higher than next door :-)

We're just going through the hassle of having a broken drain in one place and a blockage in another place............................sheeeeeesh.....

United Utilities are responsible for clearing the blockage apparently, whilst the broken wotever is ours.

I've gone right off drains! :-D

we were told years ago not to put disposable nappies down the toilet, despite what it says

and we were also told not to put tampons down there either ................... that's because the threads on then can catch on the slightest snag along the pipe, and a blockage quickly builds up.

We can put toilet paper down the loo but I always make a big point off asking visitors/clients etc not to put anything else down there. My late husband used to sort out any problems but now that would be down to me!

We had problems some years ago with blocked drains they blocked up from next door backwards and getting the people in to clear they found it was "disposable " nappies that had blocked the drains after coming some way from around the corner of the road

The only folks with a baby was some 8 houses down and they denied everything but all of us from their house to the blockage were older folks with no kiddies living at home

We all had to take our share of the bill from dyno rod to do the clearance which was annoying

The problem ones are the baby wipes and it does say on the packet not to flush them down the loo. The ones sold alongside the toilet paper as wet wipes should be all right, but it does say on the packet not to flush more than two at a time.

For caravaning you can get bio-degradable toilet paper which breaks down faster.

Do not know Ann but OH is going to tell the husband - it is up to him to rein his 3 ladies in.

Don't like quilted paper.

When we hired a motor home, we were told Tesco's own brand (unquilted) was the best toilet paper at 'breaking down' in the chemical toilet.
I personally can't stand quilted toilet paper.

We had a blocked drain a couple of years ago.I was told not to even use Quilted toilet paper as well as any kind of wipes or toilet wipes, and also those Duc* pad things.
When my daughter comes home to visit I always remind her to put the wipes she uses to remove her makeup IN THE BIN.

Yes we were told that when drains in our area were blocked. It is time the manufacturers of baby wipes and the hygiene wipes meant to replace toilet paper were made to note that they should not be put down the toilet. Goodness knows how these people would get on living in places like tenerife where you can't even put toilet paper down the toilet. Did the operator also tell neighbour do you know?

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 25 Sep 2014 17:10

Our drain runs into our neighbour's drain which then runs into main drain.

We have a manhole cover on patio and OH noticing an odour checked - it was full.
The Water Board came out very quickly and OH talking to operator who said it was neighbour's drain and blocked with baby/hygiene wipes. No babies there but two teenagers. Last time 2 years ago - then 1 baby and 2 toddlers lived there., same result - wipes.

Operator says he goes to about 20 calls daily of which usually 16 are due to wipes.
They are not biogradable (in spite of what packet says) and they have a special machine which lifts them out.

Just a word of warning to pass on.
