thanks Barry - I thought of doing that and then went into the Curry's "Know how" desk to ask for advice - they said it is possible that way but I would have to have a special programme on my computer :-(

Oh Ann <3 You've got a big job ahead of you, in more ways than one.

It will certainly be an interesting read, and, as you said, harrowing. Keep the tissues handy.

An aunt was a POW of the Japanese, she never spoke about it.

Ann, if the pages you received are clear text you might be able to scan each page so it is read and the text appears within a programme (like Word, for example) where you can copy and put it into Word document to edit, spell check, etc.
This is called OCR - optical character reader. Very handy indeed!
The capability to do this will depend on your printer and setup. I had OCR several years ago with my early Brother printers and it was a boon.
Good luck!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 26 Sep 2014 21:57

have a feeling it's going to be rather harrowing from the quick dip in I've had - I have started it, but it begins at the end with his journey home after being liberated - much too long to put on here methinks

it's something I'm doing for an ex GR member - he's 90 odd years old and his brother was a POW in Changi, Singapore in WW11 and wrote a diary - he died at age 96, but Victor, his brother promised him he would have the diary published - he asked me if I would type it up for him - I'm just a girl who can't say no, so that's what I'm doing - it arrived special delivery yesterday and I nearly died on seeing it - bit like War and Peace - I thought I would be deciphering hand writing but actually it's typewritten, but it has to be presented to a publisher on a disc so that's why it has to be retyped - all 211 A4 pages of it :-( :-( :-( :-(

Are you using Word if so go to paragraph - indents and spacing tab and underline spacing select double and there you are very easy.

If in another programme look for similar headings :-)

AnnCardiff Report 26 Sep 2014 14:10

I am typing up an extremely long document and it has to be in double spacing - how can I set it up for double spacing please
