Unfortunately it is most probably low on the list of priorities as it only seems to affect a relatively small percentage of users.

As I said earlier if sufficient members report they are having problems, then it is more likely to receive attention. This is what has happened in the past when whatever adjustments they make at their end reduces the problems for a few months.

There is also a limk to Customer Support on the Error Message.

To get the error message:
Post a message
Immediately delete it.
Use the Back button on your browser.
The message you delete will still be there (apparently).
Attempt to delete it again and the error message will appear.

(Maybe that only works with Vista and IE9)

The point is that the error message can be displayed when the software detects an anomalous situation (usually a timeout as IGP has explained) that it isn't able to recognise. There is no single fault which causes it and to detect individual faults would require a lot of extra software.

There is a link to customer support at the bottom of the T&C's page ;-)

We shouldn't have to mess about with this!!!

GR has been promising for YEARS to fix the Error Message problem.

Maybe it's way down the list of other problems to fix.

Oops, I forgot, they don't have time to fix problems, they're too busy working on another "new" tree.

:-(

When you press the back button just click on the refresh icon or press f5. That should redisplay the page with your message on.

PS some systems need ctrl f5,

From my experience the error message occurs after the message has been sent whilst returning you back to the place you started from - basically it times out before you get back to the page.

Suggestions as to why this happens have been made on many many occasions over several years now but it appears those most affected either have large i.e. tens of thousands, of postings or messages in their accounts, and is further exacerbated by using out of date browser software or with slow internet connections.

New users or those who only have a handful of postings appear to be largely unaffected.

This, coupled with the server technology in use at GR and finite site capacity has been a long running problem for certain users.

If you are seeing errors on a regular basis it is worth reporting to GR as experience shows they do take some action from their end when sufficient people complain.

Sylvia ~ thanks for that, I'll try it next time.

It can't be any more of a roundabout way of doing it than going to the Messages & going down blocked roads!

People DO keep hitting submit (I don't)....... I've often received the same message from a member several times :-(

This has been happening since I've been a member, about time it was FIXED!

oh, I do agree!

but a lot of people don't ........ they just keep hitting submit :-)

Allan

Allan Report 27 Sep 2014 05:37

Sylvia,

I do that, but it's a bl**dy roundabout way of doing things for a subscription website :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Sep 2014 04:21

when you get the ERROR message ...........................

go to your back button

click on that

that will take you back to the box where you typed the message

now look at the number of pages just above the Reply box

click on one of the pages below the one you were posting on

NOW click on the page you were on

and you will find that your post is there

It is a bit of a roundabout way .......................... but it gets you what you want ......................

your new post appearing on the thread

similarly, with sending your Contact Message ................... try clicking on the back button, and see what happens

and if you must .............................

email them .......... do not use the contact us on ehre

Allan ~ It's SO annoying!

Every time I send a contact message I get the Error Message. Sometimes (not often) when I look at my messages, and can find my message in the Sent Box, most times it's just the Error Message, over and over again.

This has been going on as long as I've been a member, and I still haven't got a satisfactory answer from GR....... It seems to be MY fault

:-(

One company I dealt with had a similar problem, their suggestion was "try using another computer" !! How many computers do most people have in their home?

Allan

Allan Report 27 Sep 2014 02:20

Scozz,

A similar thing is happening to me when I post on the quizzes thread.

As for being unable to duplicate the error, they never will if they are using their own system.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago when I couldn't access my Superannuation details on line. The Company kept saying that they couldn't duplicate the problem and its system was ok.

I persisted with my complaints and one day a bright spark had the idea of using a computer not connected to the company server to go into my account via the internet just as a normal customer would.

Guess what? They duplicated the problem!

A couple of weeks tinkering by them and my password etc. were reset and so far no problem since ;-)

There IS a link!

A few minutes ago I sent a contact message to another GR member.

Clicked send, and waited a while..... then got the dreaded Error Message.

I went to my Messages, clicked on "Sent Messages" to see it my message was sent........ waited a while...... and got ANOTHER Error Message........ but this one had a link ... to contact Customer Support!

I didn't contact them.

Fed up with the whole thing. Every time I contact them, I get the usual blah blah, what system are you using etc etc, and eventually they say they cannot duplicate what I did!

:-P
