The former Conservative Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said, these are quite incredible powers to limit democratic rights, rights that people have had for 200 years in this country, and he went on to say that the plans may have real difficulty passing through Parliament and standing up in the courts.

Maybe Theresa May is addicted to having her decisions challenged by the courts ;-)

Desperation on her part.

How do you stop such groups forming? How will it be policed?

I am reminded of the 'reign' of Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter where, every day, a new directive was nailed on the wall banning yet another group or activity.

May does not.bring this farrago of nonsense before the House now because it has no chance of success. About half the Tories themselves would vote against. May's draft would outlaw 38, active protest of any sort eg badgers, sitins Hong Kong style and could lead to book banning from Das Kapital through to Trainspotting. An idiotic woman desperate to please her masters like a poorly trained spaniel.

Rambling Rose - that bag of jelly babies who call themselves Liberal Democrats have a lot to answer for - especially the one called Clegg.

Personally I have no time for them, to me they are a bunch of outdated hippies who seem to think that they are living in the late 1960's/early 1970's days of flower power, peace, ban the bomb, and free love - that reminds me, where did I put my flared trousers :-D

'Hard cases make bad law. But the opposite side of that axiom is that bad law creates hard cases'.

{Something I read recently.}

"May will also set out proposals to ban non-violent extremist groups that fall short of the current threshold for being banned as terrorist-related organisations.

The moves to ban extremist but non-violent groups and to introduce extremist asbos were blocked by the Liberal Democrats on freedom of speech grounds....." ( quote from the Guardian)

I am inclined to think that the Conservatives are hoping that a majority ( or coalition with someone other than the Libdems) at the election will enable them to bring this in without any dispute?

The Home Secretary has confirmed that new banning orders and extremism disruption orders will form part of plans "in the next Conservative manifesto" to tackle radicalism.

The General Election is over 7 months away - so why is she not introducing these powers now? :-S
