You can google which recovery key to use for the HP BUT......I have factory reset a few laptops and on the odd occasion a port will not be recognised which gives you a complete nightmare.

Even downloading what appear to be the correct drivers doesn't work.

No discs are provided with laptops now as everything is pre-stalled and even when I have managed to get hold of the legit Windows discs and the utilities disc the re-install flops.

Please speak to a techie on a forum for help.

Edit: or just delete all the rubbish and then defrag it!

You can re-set it to a previous date.
Not sure that would get rid of cr*p.
I do it when an automatic download b*ggers mine up!

Sometimes, if you go into 'set up' it has the factory setting option.

I've done this with second hand computers.
Would love to know how you get on, as I've inherited my mum's old laptop and should really delete everything on that!

Is it programmes you want to get rid of or files photos etc?

The HP Pavilion has a hidden partition with the installation files. At boot up press the correct function key and you well get the reinstall option. This will do a factory fresh installation unless somebody has removed the hidden part. to get more disk space.

ALL current data programming installations and settings will be lost so backup.

As soon as windows update has been reinstalled you can install Microsoft updates to April 2014.

HP driver updates are on their web site.

DO NOT use any version of IE with XP install any of Firefox / Chrome / Opera.

The above applies to most major brand desktops and laptops.

If the HD has been changed or the hidden part deleted you will have to get media from the OEM if you don't have them already. Usual cost is around £30.
