This thread brings back memories as I remember seeing these in Jenners in Edinburgh and in the Co-op in Dunfermline, the Co-op in Dunfermline tubes went across roads, the Cash Office was in one street and the various departments were in nearby streets - my mother hated them, she would hand over her money to pay for what she had bought and whoosh up the tube it went and whoosh back came your change, trouble was that at busy times you waited ages for your change.

I remember one shop has a system of overhead wires that lead from the sales desks to the cash desk.

The assistant had to put the money in a container that was fixed to the wire. A handle was pulled and the money shot across to the cash desk where it was removed and the change inserted before being sent on the return journey.

I was in Tesco's in Riverhead yesterday and noticed they have these tubes.

Sadly, they no longer make that lovely swishing noise the old ones did.

Anyone here from Walworth Road and remembers the ones in Pecrys?

Our local sainsburys had a refit a few years ago. They still have discrete vacum tubes. When the till had accumulated large amounts of notes, some are sent to the cash office in the canisters.

Does the article say how long the thief had to wait? It does seem that most customers pay by card than cash nowadays.

.........

vacuum tubes for carrying money from a cash register to the office

news item ..................

A cunning burglar stole £14,500 after breaking into the roof space of a Sainsbury's in Bury in January and collecting cash in plastic pods as they passed through a vacuum tube from the cash register to the cash office.

He's been sentenced to 4 years in jail

He had previously been convicted of a similar crime at a Tesco's store in Wiltshire in 2010

Many stores had those vacuum tubes in the 1940s and 50s .......... when you bought something, the money was sent in the tube to an office, and your change returned
