War would be an exception and he would get as all the others got a demob suit, which is more than you get now. You hand in your service uniform and walk away in your civvies. In war time however and during conscription the uniform was worn most of the time. Now it's only when you are on duty so you are in civvies at least half of the time.

I confused the stores when I left the WRAF, I had only half the normal uniform and 6 white dresses due to me being in the dental branch which the SNCO knew. On going to Cyprus on a posting instead of several KD dresses I got 2 KD dresses and another 6 white dresses. According to the stores SNCO 12 dresses was too many for 1 person but I didn't get a refund for having extra kit to hand back. :-D

Really! :-0

So anything the Germans and Italians 'took' he had to pay for! :-0 :-0 Good Grief

So all the older guys with the Victorian Cross (sorry but that's the only medal I can think of) or any other medal, what bought them later?

He didn't what the clothes, hopefully he wasn't nude when they kicked him out :-D but he what'd the badges he had when he was a POW. Or didn't have as the case may be.

Now I'm mad for Frank grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

This is normal procedure. You are given your uniform (officers buy theirs) so it belongs to them, you have no right to it or to wear it once you have left the service. It is just on loan to you whilst you serve.

For securities sake it also stops people getting hold of uniforms but this has failed, look at the fashion statement of the sixties - military greatcoats.

On discharge you have to hand in all your uniform and anything else given to you before you go to accounts so missing items can be paid for.

"When I was discharged [in 1945] I had to undress and give them my clothes, badges and all the mementos of my army career. I offered to buy them back but was taken to the door and not allowed to go back in."

Now does that seem right, He was no longer a POW for pete's sake - Frank survived and was back home in the land of freedom.
Now he is trying to buy his badges etc. so he can leave them to his family.

Shame on whoever took his badges away!!!!!! :-P
