Here in Wales, if you have a Tesco grocery delivery you have the option to have it with or without bags. With bags there is a flat charge of 35p which they base on 7 being the average number of bags per delivery, though usually mine comes with at least 12 bags. Which then get reused as rubbish bags.

Rollo being as this island has a strict sabbath observance and therefore no shops are open carrying a "carry out" wouldn't be a problem!

Any carrier bags that I have, I take to work.

I work in a library and borrowers are always asking if we have a spare bag to put their books in.
We also provide packs of 100 poo bags, which are ....FREE.

I don´t have a problem paying for carrier bags, it makes people think before they discard them in the street. Although I normally take my own bag but the few times I´ve needed to buy I just use them later as pedal bin liners. A friend of mine buys just the carrier bags as they work out cheaper (they say) then liners, another friend uses them as poo bags. Mind they have a larger dog than my 2 combined.
The market still gives out free bags these I use for kitchen waste ..potato peelings or the stuff left in my sink drain catcher.

Not run across self serve tills yet as we don´t have them in Spain.

Joy is right as it happened to me today at the self service till

I already had a couple of things in my shopper, but I still needed to get some bits and pieces from Boots.

I tried to place my bag on the shelf but I got the" unexpected item" message.
I was left with two options:
Remove my existing purchases from my own bag place it empty on the shelf , or just scan the items and place them loose on the shelf.
I chose the latter, paid for the items then packed them into my shopper

AND as for shoplifting a 5p bag?
There were no 5p bags available at the self serve till in either Tesco or Boots today. You have to ask an assistant to get one for you.
I assume it's the same at the manned checkout?

Been so used to it here in Wales and I have always got a fold up bag with me.
Suppose it's never been a problem to me as we used to take our own bag or basket when shopping...rarely do I buy a bag...and I believe in Wales it has cut down the amount of plastic bags littering the place.

Last few deliveries from Tesco the veg have come in brown paper bags as a trial, perhaps they will switch to them for home deliveries.

Not that we shop at Tesco's of course that's just for the staff ;-)

Fortnum and Mason's always deliver our essentials in wicker baskets :-D

RolloTheRed - "I know nuffink”.

But fresh warm crumpets with melting butter - wow; they put hairs on my eyebrows!

My son likes the north London supermarkets at some apparently well known time ( but not to me ) when he goes looking for his crumpets. I don't think he means something for tea. Maybe Dermot who is a supermarket expert can enlighten me.

I like Supermarkets at about 6am when there are more employees present than customers.

Smashing!

In the good old days you sent the housekeeper down to the shops where she ( or he if you were grand enough to run to a butler ) would order everything necessary which would be delivered by a small van or possibly an errand boy on a push bike. At the end of the month the accounts would be settled by cheque, popped in the post and that was that. No mucking about in those cathedrals to wasted time aka supermarkets.

By some unexpected miracle the good ol' days are coming back with the likes of Waitrose and Orcado doing deliveries (Tesco & Sainsbury too but they tend to see it as a way of offloading old stock).

Even better thanks to the wonders of the common market housekeepers are once more affordable ( and nannies for those who need them ). They also tend to be adept at dealing with online supermarkets which is def. not my top line.

No bags. No UKExit.

Not having been able to find anything that fits in M&S I was not aware that they had a no bag policy unless you shelled out for one. Or maybe I am getting a bit deaf.

My usual vendors of shirts, trousers, shoes etc def. do not charge for the bags which I use for other purposes (not shopping) long after.

I can remember when I was little
all carriers where brown paper and always burst when it rained
leaving everybody with wet goods on the floor ;-) ;-)

Turtle (string) bags are really good and hold a surprising amount. Small enough to squash inside a handbag.

Potty Report 20 Oct 2014 13:58

Me too, Joy. Now we will have to buy bin liners. The new charge in Scotland doesn't just apply to plastic bags but to paper carriers as well.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 20 Oct 2014 13:50

I recycle my carriers as waste bin liners :-D :-D

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 20 Oct 2014 13:41

dunno,

maybe not, but there is often a small wad of those small bags from the veg racks, in the trolley........which find their way home as poo bags ;-)

Has anyone ever been charged with shop-lifting plastic bags?
