Island Report 7 Nov 2014 15:47

I'd love to know what made them decide not to add one this year - but they'll be putting one up next year?
Surely they are aware of the significance of 1914-2014.

It just doesn't make sense.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 7 Nov 2014 16:29

I doubt that any of them is mature enough to grasp the significance of anything that actually matters

Apology or not from GR makes no difference 1 single red poppy tells a million stories
from those who fought for us.......

1 Poppy was that too much to ask in this day and age ....we walk through life today because of those brave people in our history <3

GR you should be ashamed of yourselves!

This the reply I have got from Nick after emailing him again.
Just notce that he has said """""PASTED"""" a reply just goes to show they have automatic replies depending on the circumstances.

To me
Dear Sue,

I am so sorry for pasting the wrong name into my response to you - that was a careless mistake.

I have to also, again apologise for the unintended offence our omission to add a poppy emblem to our website has caused.

Rest assured that this has made us look at this differently and, although it is too late for us to make a technical release to the website in time for this year, the poppy emblem will be returning next year.

If it was a simple as just adding an existing image file to the website, we would do that but to make any change to our main Home Page requires a technical release which just can't be scheduled without sufficient notice. Believe me, we would do it if we could
With kind regards,

Nicky Doran

Rambling Report 7 Nov 2014 18:41

For those who don't go on FB. GR have responded on a thread re the lack of a poppy,

"We've changed the logo here on Facebook but we won't be changing the logo on the website this year. Many of us at Genes Reunited have relatives that have been lost during war and we encourage others to pay their respects however they feel most appropriate."

I have posted this ( how long it will last is another thing lol)

"It would have been nicer if someone at GH could have posted a personal reply here rather than one that is clearly a standard ' paste' job ( I say 'clearly' because it is just a repeat of what has been said elsewhere, as are the replies addressing the issue sent out to individuals who have emailed directly). This is the centenary year of the start of WW1...how in the name of all that is decent was it possible for NO ONE at GR HQ to consider that a poppy would be the very least your customers would expect this year? It's not like there haven't been reminders on almost every news broadcast for months on end. And I am advised by one who knows that adding a poppy to the GR logo on site would be easily done....if the will was there, clearly it wasn't and isn't."

This is unbelievable!

To quote Nicky :

"to make any change to our main Home Page requires a technical release which just can't be scheduled without sufficient notice. Believe me, we would do it if we could"

Is he/she saying that they didn't have sufficient notice that November 11th. was coming up? They didn't realize that November comes after October and that this particular November 11th. is a very special one?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 Nov 2014 19:47

and I have just posted this on their FB page ....................

and you could not add even ONE poppy to the Home Page on your own site

Genes Reunited ................... I am disgusted at you.

FB obviously means much much more to you than you members on GR.

and this is the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, servicemen all over the world are still being killed .........

all we wanted was ONE measly poppy on your own site.

maggiewinchester Report 7 Nov 2014 21:01

They're quick enough to put advertisements on - and take them off when they realise we, the paying members can't access parts of the site.

As you say, Margee, 100 years not enough notice?

I sent a PM, and received a reply saying they did not mean to cause offence, and will be including the poppy in 'other communications' with GR members, whatever the h*** that may mean.

It simply doesn't wash - they are completely out of order

Except to say......Shame on you GR :-(

To add even further insult......GR are sending out this e-mail

This Remembrance Weekend, Findmypast has opened up its international archives and is offering FREE access to billions of records.

All you need to do to get unlimited access to these records is register, completely free on Findmypast.

etc...................

Rememberance Day is not observed in Spain, so poppies are not readily available.
A friend in England sends them to me.
I wear one every year & the Spanish are really interested in their significance & often say that they should observe the day as well.
GR can´t even be bothered to remember that Nov 11th is approaching.
NEXT YEAR WON¨T DO!!!!!!
Nor will an entry on facebook, which a large number of us don´t belong to.
We are PAYING members of GR & a little concern for our views would be much appreciated.

,,,,,,,Its not going to happen!!,the team know how throughly dissapointed us long standing members are at not having the usual poppy which has graced the site for many years and didnt often need a reminder.!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

perhaps a gentle reminder now,,,,,, is to prepare them ,that its expected something will appear as per usual as always as happened a bauble or the ever popular :-D twinkling tree or the blob of snow will appear around the prep for christmas.

Island

Island Report 8 Nov 2014 12:47

I'm not bothered about baubles and snowflakes and rather hope they don't add them this year in light of their poor attitude regarding the missing poppy.

I'm with Island on this, as far as I'm concerned
It's a poor show at Christmas.

This however is an insult to those who gave their
lives for us...absolutely disgraceful GR.

They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
WE WILL remember them.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 9 Nov 2014 08:04

John McCrae was a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, he was so moved by what he saw he wrote this poem. The poem inspired the Legion Poppy Day, the first one being 11th November 1921

In Flanders' Fields by John McCrae 1915.

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row by row,
That mark our place and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The Torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields

Lest we forget

1968 is the only year since WW2 when no service person has died in a conflict.
