Rambling

Rambling Report 4 Nov 2014 19:22

It does seem a pity, when in previous years there HAS been a poppy, that this year in particular, when so many are commemorating the centenary of the beginning of WW1, GR did not apparently consider that its members might expect at least the same as last year, if not something more.

A very unfortunate decision by Genes Reunited.

Like many other members I do not do Facebook.

Blatant disrespect for this period of Remembrance, and for the membership.

Frankly, I am disgusted.

I find the answer from GR absolutely bloody disgusting..

I am not on FB and don#t want to be.

Just goes to show that GR even though it's a family history site with military records on it has NO RESPECT for our fallen heroes wether it be WW1,WW11 or the conflicts since then..

This makes me think twice about being a member of a site that has NO RESPECT. for anyone.

Sue

Sue Report 4 Nov 2014 18:58

Sheila,
To me it is not about how early it goes up, but the fact that they have put it on one site and not the other, therefore not everyone can see it.

Also as i said previously, they are a site that promote military records, so it is not too much to ask.

I get where you are coming from, but an outward show is what people are asking for. :-) Sue

After reading Shelley's post, my reaction was like most - annoyance, especially in this the centenary year of the WW1 war.

On the other hand, wouldn't it be better for those of us who care to buy our own poppies and put a few more coins in the tin? Nothing can bring back the dead, but we can help to make life a little easier for the living.

Does it really matter that much - do a few pixels on a website denote 'respect'? :-S

Sue

Sue Report 4 Nov 2014 18:41

Not all members of GR are on facebook, or want to be.

I also think it is totally out of order, as this is a family history site promoting military records.

GR should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for being so two faced.

Rollo and Budgie are right - the techies have left the building and any attempt at a change by 'the team'(?) would mess up the site.

There's nothing to stop members adding their own poppies.

Absolutely unacceptable!!!

I do not use Facebook and never will.

I am a paying member of this site and have been for 10 years. I expect the poppy to be displayed on this site.
Forget about Facebook.

Careful Mersey sweetie... xx <3
You should know by now the slightest bit of tinkering on here by the GR techies usually leads to problems.

Hi everyone,

This year, although we won't be adding a poppy to our logo on the main site we have changed our background and profile picture on our Facebook page in the spirit of remembrance and encourage all of our members to honour the heroes in their family how they feel most appropriate.

Regards,

Shelley

I wonder if Google will support it? They did away with mentioning Christmas last year.

In war time women turn to red
swivel-up scarlet and carmine
not in solidarity with spilt blood
but as a badge of beating hearts.

This crimson is the shade of poets
silenced for speaking against torture,
this vermillion is art
surviving solitary confinement,

this cerise defies the falling bombs
the snipers taking aim at bread-queues,
this ruby’s the resilience of girls
who tango in the pale-lipped face of death.

There was a bit of an uproar on FB when somebody claimed that an 89 year old war veteran was told to stand outside of the local supermarket in the cold, rather than in the warm foyer where they usually collect for the annual poppy appeal.

It turns out he chose to stand outside because there seemed to be more people to sell poppies to out there.

Remberance day in 2018 will be on the 11th. The 100th anniversary of the Armistice will be on a Sunday. :-)

Remembrance day is on the 9th of November this year ;-) It's on the Sunday closest to Armitice Day (which is on the 11th).
