About three years or so ago I planted some watercress seed in a planter on a pedestal without any drainage. I kept it in sunlight which I later found to be the wrong environment and carefully kept it watered.

The result was some tiny, weedy little leaves that looked more like toadflax to me but I persevered and then, having read that it likes shade, moved it round by the backdoor, the original place where the sun don't shine.

It still didn't do much but, you may recall, I bought that water feature to grow it in so it had running water, What with one thing and another,it was left to fester and the water feature hasn't yet been used. In fact, we decided to start again and put the last attempt on the compost heap as a no hoper.

That never happened either. However, having been totally neglected, allowed to dry out and die off because it was going to the heap, I now have a beautiful crop in the planter. Big, green, delicious leaves in abundance. It looks like the stuff you buy in the supermarkets and farm shops.

Evidently watercress needs to be frightened into producing!
