Shields Gazette and Daily Telegraph Wednesday July 23rd 1873

James Rawley, painter, was charged by Sergt Averill with being drunk and riotous in Grange Road, Jarrow, on 21st inst. Prisoner admitted the charge, but said he had a compound fracture on the head, and very little drink took effect on him. He had previously been convicted of a similar offence, and was fined 5s and costs

Shields Gazette etc Wednesday November 16th 1870

Accident in a ship building yard. A man named James Rawley, 30 years of age, residing at Hebburn, was admitted into the Newcastle Infirmary yesterday with a fractured skull. Rawley was employed as a painter, and whilst busily engaged on the deck of the vessel, he slipped and fell down to the hold, receiving a compound fracture of the skull and other injuries.

the Newcastle courant (1870)has an article about a James Rawley age 30 in a serious accident in a ship building yard at Hebburn....he was a painter.....may not be the same one, but you never know.

............ unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a Quarter Sessions record on Ancestry which might give a reason for his imprisonment.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post or in any way inappropriate.

One of my wife's ancestors is James Rawley listed in the 1871 and 1881 census as a prisoner:

1871: archive ref rg10, folio 33, page 27, piece 5037 address Hedworth Mnkton & Jarrow described as Prisonners Police Office

1881: archive rg11, folio 127, page 1, piece 4959 described as prisoner at Old Elvet, Durham

I am trying to discover how long he was there, what he was in for, but just about a full day of searching has got me absolutely no where. Could anybody point me in the right direction.
