OneFootInTheGrave Report 5 Nov 2014 11:48

Terrified passengers fled a packed double-decker bus moments before it exploded on the high street of an affluent commuter-belt town.

A passing police officer on patrol was today praised for averting a possible tragedy when he flagged down the bus in Wallington, South London, after spotting smoke coming from a rear wheel arch. The driver pulled up and passengers were led to safety as the rear of the 157 service from Morden to Crystal Palace became engulfed by flames at 2pm yesterday.

Minutes later witnesses described a “massive explosion” which shattered the bus windows and sent debris flying. A blazing tyre shot across the road landing inches from cars parked on the forecourt of a second-hand car dealership.

Wow, well done that police office for being alert. Some of those people may owe him their lives.

That bus in Wallington, that caught fire, is about a mile and half from where I live.
Luckily no one was hurt.
I use that bus route on occasions. In both directions

It can be a busy route at certain times of the day, and it passes through several busy places - if it was not for that that police officer it could have been much more serious.

If my car, that is when I had a car, belched out smoke or grinding noises like some of the London buses I have been on - my first port of call would have been a garage to find out what was wrong :-(

Always thought Wallington was in Surrey

Yes it is in Greater London, but has a Surrey Postcode.

Me being pedantic again.
