£1542 pa??? Is that metered or based on the rateable value?? Unless you live in a palace, it seems an awful lot!!

Although we were swapped to meter 2 years ago, our annual rate inc sewage and run off in 2012 was £858, Band E
Waste water - Southern water
Water - South East water.

Don't ask me what it is now - we've still got a large credit :-)

Wisechild we had rain on Tuesday enough to run torrents but not enough to flood or do any good. Apart from that we have had about 3 other part days of rain. ´Hasn´t it pulled the temperature down I even put the duvet on the bed !

As with yourselves we have had no rain all summer so the ground is so dry that the rain runs off and typical of Spain there is no drainage. Wellies maybe I will buy some this year :-D
good luck

I´m in Menorca & we had about 3 hours of rain between mid May & yesterday with temperatures between 30& 35c in all that time......apparently the longest heatwave for 100 years.
The lack of adequate drainage is ts due to non existent maintenance by the local council. It´s always the same after a prolonged dry spell, made worse by the fact that the pavements are very shallow & very narrow.& the drains can´t get the surface water away fast enough.
The council never seem to get the message, so it´s on with the wellies.

Sheer volume of rain water in a short space of time caused flooding where I was in July. It was just too much, plus motorists not putting their brains in gear and causing the water to flood into shops.

You cannot brush rainwater uphill.

That's my contribution to this thread. Not much - is it?

If the drains cannot cope is it because of so much rain, or because of lack of service by the local councils?

As a lad in London (1950's/60's) I recall that the "gulley suckers" were a regular sight around the streets. Today I don't know if my local council actually owns one.

I thought it was quite a mixed summer with a lot of rain in August?

Last summer was warmer for longer.

Well, that's my neck of the woods anyway.

wisechild Report 6 Nov 2014 11:45

No.
Right sort of rain. Just so much of it the drains can´t cope. :-0

We have had the hottest summer on record with almost no rain since mid May.
Rained in torrents yesterday from about 9 am & continued without stopping until 11.am today, accompanied by thunder & lightning.
We must have had 6 months rainfall in about 28 hours & the temperature has dropped from 24c on Monday to 13c today.
Winter draws on. :-( :-( :-(
