Neither did I! There are several versions on the internet. This might not be the correct one

Was the advert this one?
https://uk.news.yahoo.com/video/sexual-e-cigarette-advert-sparks-105003973.html

It doesn’t actually show an e-cigarette, or a vape thingy. The sexual innuendo is totally wrong but could encourage people to look out for a follow up advert.

If the advert was suggesting e-liquids/cigarettes as aids to kicking tobacco products, I’d welcome it. I’d actually like shops to make them more prominent amongst their cigarette displays, again with associated banners as a less dangerous alternative. Anyone who watched the recent series of Scott and Bailey may have noticed one of the characters using a vape at her desk.

OH and I have been smokers for over 40 years. 4 weeks ago due to a health scare we both swapped to e-cigarettes. Despite saying for years that we ought to stop/cut down, on this occasion the timing in so many ways was ‘right’.

There is a place in the market for them. Although it is better not to become a nicotine addict to start with, clearer advertising, acceptance and accessibility could help more established smokers kick the habit.

I was disgusted to see that ad on tv, and don't think it should be allowed to be repeated.

I would also not be happy to be sitting next to a person using one. Cigarettes in public places and workplaces have been banned for some time so why show that ad as if it was an ok thing to do.

My Dad died of lung cancer in 1990, he had smoked most of his adult life and only gave up for short periods of time.

I worked in offices where all the men smoked as they worked and also worked in night clubs and pubs in the evenings, so was subjected to a lot of smoke. Also had partners who smoked when I was younger.

I only smoked on odd social occasions when younger but haven't had more than the occasional ciggie since the 1970s and none for the past 20 yrs.

Just hope the passive smoking never causes me a problem.

I agree with your comments Rose, on we dont know the long term effects smoking e cigarettes will cause. I'm not sure people are using them as temporary aid to giving up smoking, but as a more healthy alternative.

We dont know if it is a better alternative yet. I still dont think they can be good for anyone.
I know about addiction, alcholol, drugs, and how hard it is, and i can empathise with anyone in this situation.

"The UK advertising rules for alcohol are amongst the strictest in the world."

I'm not a smoker, but I don't think Ecigarettes should be advertised if they are made to look a 'glamorous accessory' rather than as a 'temporary aid to quitting' no one knows the long term effects of them.

I don't disagree with Ecigs being advertised. After smoking for 47 years I swapped to an Ecig April 2013 and haven't had one single real ciggie since.

I nursed my sister who died from lung and brain cancer in 2004 and that still didn't stop me. The majority of addicts cannot give up.

Please remember that people over 60 would have experienced smoking as the norm. I was even given an ashtray in St. Thomas' Hospital, Westminster when I was on bed rest (up until 1979). At night a couple of the nurses would bring cups of tea, sit with me and have a cigarette too. Also GPs' surgeries and dental surgeries had ashtrays available in waiting rooms.

I haven't seen the advert but from what people have said, i get the gist of it.

Its hard to believe that after all this time, and all the information available, people dont know the risks of smoking. Whether it is e cigarettes or otherwise.

So i dont really see why an advert should make any difference to whether a person smokes or not. Its more likely to be peer pressure or simply choosing to smoke.
If i want to watch something on tv that has adverts, i usually record it, and then skip the adverts, as they really irritate me.

I saw my Dad slowly dying from lung cancer, and if everyone was to see something like that, and it didnt put them off, then it serves them right. Their choice.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but i feel v strongly about smoking.

As a memento, I have retained the last packet of cigarettes (5 remaining) belonging to my dad who died of lung cancer in 1985.

hang on a minute - alcohol is widely advertised - not just on TV but all over the place - abuse of alcohol costs this country millions every year yet it is allowed to be advertised

Although I use e-cigarettes on a regular basis and supplement them on ocassions with ordinary cigarettes - I do not agree with them being advertised on our television screens.

I can appreciate that E cigs are great to help people quit, but as we all know they are being touted as vaporizing and made trendy.

Who knows what substances the nicotine will be replaced with so the chap in the pub next to you might be off his face on something.

They should be just basic sticks and only available though outlets like chemists or an in-store pharmacy.

Don't know about you, but those designer things in bright colours or shiny chrome look downright stupid to me ;-)

OneFootInTheGrave Report 10 Nov 2014 15:23

From what I have read and heard, the words risqué and provocative come to mind ;-) if it is, it will, by it's very nature - convey an image of smoking being glamorous :-(

The Loose Women (ITV) have seen the advert and were saying today how appalling they found it.

They had to be very careful of their description as it was early in the day - lets just say it may belong on the 'top shelf'.

Tobacco advertising was banned on UK television in 1965, with the exception of rolling tobacco and cigars, which were banned in 1991.

Tonight after the watershed, ITV will run a commercial featuring a woman exhaling vapour from an e-cigarette :-S

The banning on tobacco advertising was aimed at reducing the number of people who smoked.

The advert being shown tonight relates to e-cigarettes, that said, I think adverts for any cigarettes could encourage people to smoke, and could see an increase in people smoking not only e-cigarettes but also ordinary cigarettes.

I am a smoker and I don't think it should be shown - what do you think ?
