Landmark ruling on so called benefit tourism

OneFootInTheGrave Report 11 Nov 2014 11:17

The European Court of Justice has ruled that unemployed EU citizens who go to another member state to claim benefits may be barred from some benefits.

The ruling on so-called "benefit tourism", relating to a case in Germany, could set an important legal precedent for the rest of the EU.

It could allow the UK to exclude some unemployed migrants from receiving some benefits such as jobseeker's allowance.

The ruling only applies to non-contributory benefits, benefits where the claimant does not make a contribution through the tax system.

I like the first few lines from the link OFTG put on...

The European Court of Justice has said member states are within their rights to refuse to give financial help to unemployed EU citizens who move to that country just to claim benefits.

So Cameron was right to say we don't want immigrants here who are just going to claim benefits...

Sue In Yorkshire - David Cameron had a valid point when he said we don't want benefit tourists coming to the UK, however this ruling by the European Court of Justice will mean that, he will have one less piece of ammunition to use, to pacify his Eurosceptic MP's - and he needs all the ammunition he can find ;-)
