Many thanks everyone for your help, I am registered with Scottish records but since I have a full subscription with GR thought, wrongly(!!), that they may provide. Oh well back to scottish records searching for MacDonald - not easy! :-)

Genes has transcribed Census records for 1841 to 1901.

The original images plus 1911 census and Statutary BMD from 1855(?) are on Scotlandspeople, a pay to view site
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/welcome.aspx

You can also search the following for free on https://familysearch.org/search

Scotland Census, 1841
Scotland Census, 1851
Scotland Census, 1861
Scotland Census, 1871
Scotland Census, 1881
Scotland Census, 1891
Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910

http://www.freereg.org.uk/ has some early parish BMD and http://www.deceasedonline.com/ has burial records. With the latter, you can search for free and get basic info - date of internment or cremation and possible date of death - but pay to view the full details on the burial register

Other than trees and census I don't think Genes has any Scottish records? Not BMDs anyway which I think you'll have to go to Scotland's people site for.
