The garden is a disaster

three hours later... 10.30am

I haven't seen Arnie.

I can hear something scratching around in the undergrowth, not sure if it's Arnie or Wally the waterdragon.

I'm NOT going down there with my rake. :-D

Thanks Merlin...... I'll try the grenade shop :-D

I heard it yesterday afternoon, so I grabbed a rake (one of those plastic ones for raking up leaves) and hobbled down to the turkey's level. I chased him across the garden, he got on top of the fence and went next door. I wish he'd build his nest next door, their garden is and always has been a mess... lots of stuff for him to build with.

I didn't think I would make it back up the steep incline, by the time I eventually got back inside I was exhausted. Steep slopes & wonky hips don't go well together :-(

DH spent over two hours replacing plants, shovelling soil, pebbles & mulch. Not a happy chappy. If the turkey had appeared when DH was shovelling, it might have had a shovel applied to its head.

Nearly 7.30am here, we haven't heard the beast yet...... but he'll be back!

I think I'll call the turkey Arnie.

They'e not protected or endangered, but you'd get into trouble if you killed one.

This male is a PEST!

DH put some chicken wire in the back garden this morning, hopefully he'll get some more today.

Our back garden is large, on three tiers, mostly tropical plants....... and the turkey has dug up small palms, lots of ferns, bromiliads & loads of other plants, as well as scattering mulch & leaves everywhere. It looks like a bomb's gone off.

I'm considering throwing something at it....... a jar of cranberry sauce comes to mind.

Are they considered pests, or protected species?

Sharron, it wasn't just the garden that was neglected. We've done lots to the house too.

There are so many bush turkeys around, more than we've seen for years. They walk along the the middle of the roads, don't move when cars approach, so far we haven't seen any dead turkeys in the gutters. Last week we had ten... yes 10! turkeys on the front lawn.

It's 6.30am here, and the turkey is in the back garden, shovelling away...... I'm sure he wants a nest in the stone circle.

I'm wondering whose hunting dog I can borrow.

:-(

Have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_brushturkey

He's out of here! We don't want more snakes :-( :-(

I found this:

The hareware store opens at 8.30........ I hope they've got some chicken wire in stock.

I expect that is why your garden was neglected when you moved in.

That's where you're going wrong, Scozz :-P

You boil both the rock and the turkey for eight days, throw both the rock and the turkey out, and use the water for bathing in ;-)

It may smell a bit fowl, but what the heck! :-D :-D :-D :-D

It just proves that you come from fine stock :-D :-D :-D

We've won prizes for our garden, every year since we moved here 8 years ago.

There were a few big trees, a patch of scrubby grass when we moved in, and we've done a lot of hard work and spent loads of money!

We won't bother entering the competition this year.

Why?

We've been invaded. By turkeys.

They've scratched around the whole garden..... the 2 metre wide gravel path is completely covered with soil, mulch and dug up plants. The rest of the garden looks like it was hit by a tornado. The turkeys must have dug down at least 30cm and flung soil, plants etc everywhere.

It looks like they (he?) has started building a nest..... in the middle of my stone circle. Maybe it's a pagan turkey.

Don't even think about suggesting we have the turkeys for Christmas dinner :-D they're bush turkeys....... the sort you boil with a rock, and after three days of boiling you eat the rock.
