While working on my family tree I have looked at the ways individuals used to look for work, from queuing at the old Labour Exchanges set up over a 100 years ago, and others who were seeking work queuing at the docks or factory gates, in the hope the manager, foreman, or gang-master, would pick them - looking at current employment trends, I wonder if in some ways, we have gone back to those days, except that nowadays, you don't que up and hope to be picked - you sit at home with your zero hour contract and hope for a phone call ;-) |

It's far better to phone them than it is to wait for them to phone you. ;-) |

Graham, that does not always produce the answer you might want, I have a friend who is on a zero hour contract who was more or less told - don't call us we will call you :-( |

I am sure there are employers who are not abusing the zero hours contract, I just have not come across any, but they are probably busy enough trying to keep their business afloat without having to deal with unwanted phone-calls. |

I found these comments, by the Chairman of John Lewis, on current employment trends in the UK quite interesting. |
