It's just another part of the sickly schmaltz that comes out at Christmas, however this year's offerings have outdone themselves :-S

I think the whole point of the advert is to get us to buy the bar of chocolate from which all the proceeds go to the British legion, I found it very moving, and as to it being entertaining I don't think it's meant to be. When my daughter has spoken to work mates about it there were several of them who did not know anything about the truce. If you watch the film of the story behind it on youtube they interview people who have read about the truce from the diaries they have of their ancestors who were part of it. I don't shop in Sainbury's very often but if I am near one between now and Christmas I will buy a bar of chocolate the same as I bought a poppy, to raise money for those still fighting and risking their lives. Sainsbury has supported the British Legion for 20 years and last year they raised 4.5 million so I doubt this advert was made to promote themselves in any way.

i for one applaud them.

I agree with Gwynne, and with the author of the following article in The Guardian:

I abhor anything that romanticises war. This is not even how the real event was.

There has been far too much romanticising and sanitising of WW1 over the last months. It was bloody, it was messy, it was cold, it was frightening and it was a dreadful pointless loss of a generation of young men.

And selling chocolate won't sanitise that.

I did read that all the profit from the chocolate bar used in the advert is to go to RBL and I noted that the RBL's name appears 'in conjunction with' (or something. So not all bad if they get some money out of it.

Even if, as Gwynne says, it is historically incorrect maybe it will encourage children to find out more about the occasion.

No,no,no,no.

I looked at the beginning of it and I really don't want to watch an advertisement involving WW1.

I have very carefully avoided all the programmes that were centred around the conflict as well.

I just don't want to be entertained in any way by any sort of medium that is centred on the conflict any more than I wanted to be entertained by that that was centred around the Titanic.

It will probably adversely affect any idea I might have ebtertained about shopping at Sainsbury's.

Overly sentimental and I doubt they would have been so clean and tidy.

Won't be making me shop at Sainsbury's although I like the occasion to be marked.

It can't be their main (Seasonal) Advert - they've had one on this evening showcasing their foods.

The British Legion is associated with the youtube version - might just it be that Sains have sponsored it?

Otto is hot and he has chocolate ;-)

I do find it very moving though, despite the commercial aspect

Overly sentimental and historically inaccurate.

But Sainsbury's won't care as long as it makes them money.

Very poignant. But will it make you shop at Sainsbury's?
