The arch- rival is dead!

The man who held on to the title of oldest person in the village despite all of Fred's efforts to take it has died.

This means that Glad, Fred's long and still serving comrade in the Sausage Sandwich Platoon (along with Fred's mate) is now not just the oldest woman in the village and person who has lived here longest (worthy successor to Fred) but she is also now the oldest person in the village.
