Could be condensation forming on the ceiling of an unused and perhaps unheated room that is leaching out some staining from the subsurface.

Just check it is not forming the face of Elvis or something , you might have a new tourist attraction on your hands! ;-)

No I keep the heat on in there just in case I have visiters it is a huge room though my neighbour told me that one owner had full size snooker table in there and I have been next door and seen the lay out and four rooms have been knocked into one in mine. Why did I buy it? I thought it make a lovely bedsit for my mum but she would not move so we all have to travel to her.

I have similar marks on my lounge ceiling (bungalow) and had them a few years ago as well. Both then and now it was a slight leak in the flue where it goes through the roof tiles and where the rain can get in at times and drip on the insulation and then dampen the ceiling. They are coming to fix it next week. Might it be from a leak in your roof too? Or from condensation drips in the loft?

Oh it's a puzzle isn't it Linda. At first I thought ours might be a dead mouse decaying in our loft under the insulation as we get quite a few up there in the winter!! :-0 Have you tried wiping the marks off? I suppose it could even be something they painted over when they did the ceiling and has gradually worked it's way to the surface. I do hope they can find out what it is for you or be certain it is nothing to worry about....do let us know!
