It must be difficult to 'cook' when you have been made redundant, have no savings as you've been on the minimum wage and then sanctioned by JCP...for as little as, turning up late for your signing on.........grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The Baroness's revolting dress no doubt cost more than a month's wages for many

What a blind woman to people's hardships

Doesn't she realise it costs fuel to cook which some folk can't afford

Just as heating for some, it's use the heat or eat they can't do both

She should try living in a deprived area where there are very few jobs

Not everyone on benefits are lazy and not wanting to work, many want to get out of the poverty trap.

Is it worth the waiting for?
If we live 'til eighty four
All we ever get is gruel!
Every day we say our prayer --
Will they change the bill of fare?
Still we get the same old gruel!
There's not a crust, not a crumb can we find,
Can we beg, can we borrow, or cadge,
But there's nothing to stop us from getting a thrill
When we all close our eyes and imagine

Food, glorious food!
Hot sausage and mustard!
While we're in the mood --
Cold jelly and custard!
Peas pudding and saveloys!
What next is the question?
Rich gentlemen have it, boys --
indigestion!

Food Glorious food
One movement of realing
One movement of removing that
Full up feeling
Food Glorious food

What wouldn't we give for
That extra bit more
That's all we live for
Why should we be fated to do
Nothing but rude food
Magical food,
Wonderful food,
Heavenly food,
Beautiful food,
Food, Glooorrriiiooouuusss Fooooood!

Thanks Rollo shall be singing that all day now!!!

Maybe next time she will think before she speaks, although I wouldn't hold my breath. She did admit she was talking unscripted and apologised. However, if she had not been thinking it she wouldn't have said it!

OneFootInTheGrave Report 10 Dec 2014 11:44

When I read some of the reports about the rise in food banks since this government came to power in 2010 and some of the appalling stories of how decisions by the agencies acting on behalf of the Department for Works and Pensions, I am reminded of the way vulnerable people with insufficient means to live on, in days gone by, were discouraged from applying for help.

The Poor Law Amendment Act came into force on 21 August 1834 and was specifically and explicitly aimed at discouraging people from applying for relief.

Between 1834-47 the central body responsible for poor relief was called the Poor Law Commission but after 1847 it was called the Poor Law Board. The Board had overall responsibility for relief - I suppose in 2014 the Poor Law Board's equivalent is the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) and it would not surprise me if Iain Duncan Smith was considering reintroducing the badges worn by paupers that were introduced by the Poor Law Act of 1697 ;-)

OFitG, I've just spent the past half hour reading about Tory's views on the poor - and found an interesting article comparing the Poor Law Reforms to this Government.

Unfortunately, I also found an article about Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, who introduced those on Disability Allowance to ATOS

The deluded blame today’s poverty on the poor.

But the poor have lived without hope in every generation while politicians continue to fool the electorate with mealy-mouthed pointless promises & propaganda.

You're welcome OFitG.

The article comparing the Poor Law and the current Government is here - you'll need to copy & paste.

DazedConfused Report 10 Dec 2014 16:00

I wonder how many of those who are lucky enough to be in work are just 2 pay packets away from poverty.

That, amount is, in many cases, just what it takes to tip most families into the poverty trap these days.

Next year, when the interest rates go up, we will see a big increase in homes being taken back by the banks, more people using/needing food banks.

It is a very sorry state we are in.

And why do these people, the rich and politicians in the main, not look into Food Banks before they open their plum filled mouths. You cannot just turn up. You have to be referred and I believe in most places you can only go 4 times within a certain period.

Then they go on about them all having flat screen tvs, have any of these people gone into any electrical shop and seen anything but flat screen tvs, which if you choose a non big brand are really cheap.

I despair..... :-(
