Lavender furniture polish, cos we always had a special clean up before Christmas, and then toasted crumpets on the open fire.

The house always smelt wonderful in the days leading up to Christmas.....Christmas cake, puddings, mince pies and also (every morning) a strange smell of paint? :-S...which when, older, I found was the enamel paint Santa's elves used, to paint our dolls' house and my brother's garage and fort :-D

We always had candied fruit, or Newberry Fruits in a box.

Mum and Dad made their own Cherry Brandy. Put cherries in a Kilner jar, and added brandy, and left for about 3 months. Lethal!!!!

Our mixed nuts were put on the sideboard.....................and left................then thrown out in February!!

oh and chocolate covered Brazil nuts,forgot about those.

gosh so many things we had only at christmas and I thought we had a simple cheap one,,,,,,,, ;-) :-D.

I never got clothes at christmas,,,,,,much to my grumpiness as a teen.

The bags of assorted nuts with a nut cracker,I used to sit on the arm of my Grandads chair and watch him with 2 bowls on his lap at Christmas.....the Brazils were always his favourite, I can still hear the sound now, both from the nutcracker and also the
crunching sound he made :-D <3

The chocolate liqueres, were dads favourites,,,,,,,but he did share them.

also the ever fav chocolate yule log with a prig of plactic holly..

yes Sharron they were,,,,,,but because you can get them anytime they dont seem to have the same excitement as they did only having them at christmas,

and the box of 50 cigarettes that dad got,,,,,Navy Cut or Senior Service,

and always the colouring book and proper colouring pencils or a box of paints from Woolworths,,,,,,simple things that gave lots of pleasure,

If slid out of the box when nobody was looking.

Chocolate liqueurs. The cherry brandy ones were best.....if allowed! :-D

Those chocolate mints were Clarnico weren't they? Ypu could get them without chocolate on them as well.

Sugar mice and New Berry fruits with a liquid centre - only at Christmas :-)

I remember getting a tube of butterscotch gums in a selection box but I have never seen any more.

we had chocolate Mints Creams,,, maybe they were 3d shape I think.........in a cardboard tube,,,,,,,right posh. :-D.

and would it not be christmas without the big cut glass bowl of home made trifle with chopped nuts on top...and the must have tin of fruit cocktail...... :-D :-D but must be eaten with bread and butter,,,,,,,

I always got a box of Just Fruit Jellies and always left the yellow ones and still do now at Christmas :-D :-D

we also used to always have a Tunis cake - it was a madeira cake with a thick layer of chocolate on the top decorated with marzipan fruits

Actually managed to get one in Sainsbury's last Christmas - first time I'd seen them for many years

We only ever got After Eights after our Christmas Dinner, never to be seen again till the following year LOL :-D :-D

and always a dish of sugared almonds - we had the dates with the wooden stabber :-D

we lived in an old cottage with huge fireplaces and Dad used to cut down a tree and after the fire had got going, put the trunk on, part of it up the chimney, and it used to burn down slowly all over Christmas, and when we went to bed on Christmas night there were usually nutshells all over the place, excepting for the almonds which no one could ever crack

We always had a bowl of mixed nuts and they never were eaten.

A box of dates, wooden drum of Turkish Delight, ring of dried figs, box of candied figs and a jar of root ginger in syrup.

When did you last see candied figs?

Dont forget the tin of Bluebird/Sharpes sweets,,,,with a picture on the lid that was at the bottom of the pillowcase.with the nuts and a tangerine.

I got into buying good condition ones a few years ago and a look at them brings back loads of happy christmases.
