Does anyone do this nowadays? Can recall my mother with a halfcrown each to the milkman/coalman/binman/postman/breadman.

Nowadays we only give to the postman and that is if we are sure it is he. Luckily he knocked our door yesterday and they swopped letter! (there was more than a halfcrown in the card.)

Years ago folks did tip .i know my mum always did to the postman ,milkman, and the bin men

But then they were the same men all the year

I don't tip them because don't know any them

I do tip the window cleaner though as he is consistent

I think it is a terrible thing and more people should be prosecuted.

It causes a blot on our landscape and costs councils thousands of pounds to clean up.

:-D :-D

My mother used to tip the regulars who delivered things - postman, milkman and coalman. It was expected and they all used to knock.

These days nothing gets delivered, except post, and the postman keeps changing!!

So, No, I don't tip anyone.

eRRolSheep - fly tipping is awful although I tend to kill many of the flies that carelessly pass much too close for my liking.

Swat!

I just tip the young girl who delivers our newspapers because I know how grateful my kids were for Christmas tips when they did newspaper rounds.

eRRolSheep - obvious as the nose on my face. Your talent is wasted on this thread!

I hope that that is a compliment

Up until two years ago we always tipped the postman because he was regular and very reliable. These days we have a string of different ones with one who is more constant and pleasant than others. I shall see if he is doing the rounds for another week before I decide. Other than that no. years ago used to tip the dustmen (now operatives or whatever). But then years ago they would collect the bins from and return them to the garden where they 'lived'.

We tip the papergirl. Dustbin men and recycling men.

Same ones for years...papergirl we have seen all year

No. Never have tipped them; in this day and age it seems demeaning They are already paid to do their job.

The milkman comes at some unearthly hour
The refuse collectors are a team
We never seem to have the same postman and at this time of year they are more than likely to be seasonal workers.

Window cleaner and the milkman.

I think our milkman is paid by the amount he delivers and with less and less people having deliveries it must be more difficult to make a decent living.

I know I could get my milk a lot cheaper in supermarkets, and I do 'top up' there, but I keep in mind that it can be a vital service for the housebound so am doing my bit to keep the round going.

All credit to mine as he battled through when we had that heavy snow a couple of years running and when the heavens opened earlier this year.

Must add the only one who gets money
as a tip is the paper girl.

When my Husband was a Postman he used to get tips. They had to all take them back to the depot where they were pooled and then shared out according to rank. Shortly after this they were allowed to keep their own tips but were taxed on what the tax people thought they got so really it wasn't good for them to get tips.
