I used to smile, at watching some techie "race typing" yeah he WAS quick.

but if you have to backtrack and re write after every few words, useless,

slower but accurate is the thing.......

I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions, Lavender. :-D :-D

Grand daughter's still enjoying her 'museum' piece - something she wanted for Christmas, rather than lessons in calligraphy.
Mind you, her handwriting is excellent anyway.

German keyboards use QWERTZ

That slowed me down for a while.

There are various theories why typewiriters have keyboards set out as QWERTY AZERTY etc. Some say it was to slow down typists who could lock up early machines. Some say it is to put less used letters at the edge. Some say Clive Sinclair is responsible. My favorite is that at some point when ABCD could have been implemented the typist union demanded QWERTY 'cos it made life difficult for non typists.

There is no point at all in young people wasting their time with museum piece old typewriters. They would be better off learning caligraphy - an essential skill in China and Japan. The current state of handwriting in UK schools is deplorable.

I do have an old Olympia portable which took me through uni. but it is very rarely used.

The DVORAK keyboard is full supported by all operating systems and is much less aggravating than QWERTY/AZERTY. It is much better for non touch typists.

Better yet is the new standard keyboard which takes the common sense approach of using ABCD ...

The disappearance of the typing pool, short hand, golf balls, dragon types running typing pools and all the space and wasted time they accounted for is one of the unsung achievements of the C20. Sadly we still have the QWERTYUIOP legacy which is not a good thing.

Canadian keyboards make it easy to type French accents while keeping to QWERTY (France uses AZERTY). Some languages go right to left rather than left to right. There is usually a clown in most offices who sets some PCs to R2L mode and larfs.

They can get up to reasonable speeds using the wrong fingers, about 30 wpm. An Office Skills teacher at the local secondary school says that by they time she gets hold of them (16yrs) it's too late to change their habits. :-0

I think she's just 'finding her way' on it at the moment. They don't learn any sort of typing at school now, so just the minimum of self-training would put her at an advantage.

Just realised, I'm typing with all of my right hand and one finger of my left hand (smoking)!

He, he.
What goes around, comes around.

When the offspring were young, I went on an adult education typing course. Practice used to occur after OH went to bed. As our dining table is below our bedroom, he used to complain about the noise of the demented woodpecker :-D

If she can unlearn the bad typing habits and relearn with the correct fingers, it will set her up for adult life.

Bless her. Is she touch typing? It was always so satisfying to swipe the carriage.so I can understand her pleasure.

Your daughter needs some earplugs,

My 12 year old grand daughter wanted a typewriter for Christmas.
I dug out the one I had bought for her mum and aunt over 25 years ago - a Remington 'portable' that weighs about half a stone. Cleaned and oiled it, bought a new ribbon, found a book from the 1970's on 'how to type' (from my own collection) and some carbon paper. Bought some tippex. Gave her some cash to spend as it was a relatively 'cheap' gift.

Now her mum/my daughter is moaning about the loud clickety clack.

I call it Karma, and point out that her daughter is now participating in 'living history', (how many other 12 year olds have 'come across' carbon paper), and she (my daughter) is now suffering as I did when she had the bl**dy typewriter :-D

I love being a granny :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
