If you power-hosed teenagers several times a day & scrubbed them raw with carbolic soap, the unbeatable powers of galloping male hormones would still render your fight a futile one.

My mum never washed on new years day or a good friday, she said it washed a soul away,,,,,,,,,,,and tonight she would hide outside the lump of coal, piece of bread and a sixpence.

Who even feels like doing washing on 1st January?

No connection anywhere in the family to showmen or travellers, but my mother- raised in a small Welsh village would never wash on New Year's day as she said it washed someone out of the family.
I don't believe you can influence such things by doing some washing, but out of respect for Mum's views, my sister and I still don't wash clothes on January 1st.

... Machine has worked overtime today though.

ONE FOR WASHING POTS AND PANS

Good one Dermot!

Ours must have bucked the trend - there were riots if the H/W had run out!

Never come across that saying, but then we've never socialised to that extent with showmen or travellors. May be they were recovering from the night before and it was a good excuse to have an easy day ;-)

I've heard that one - but it was Good Friday, not New Year's Day :-S

There are far too many who have a dubious relationship with water - and I'm not hinting at their attire entirely.

The average teenager remains convinced that a toxic fug sprayed from a canister will somehow win the war against the sweaty stink emanating from their arm pits.

In the fight against sweat, they see underarm deodorant as their very own chemical weapon of mass destruction - a possible distant relation to the stuff Syria's President, Bashar Assad unleashed not so long ago in Damascus.

Deodorants, by their very name, suggest they might be a way to rid oneself of a sweaty pong – but they were never more a perfume that tried to mast reality.

I have heard the saying 'wash New Years Eve - wash one out, wash New Years Day - wash one in' .

Where on earth I got that from I don't know, but my washing machine is still today ;-)

However (sorry kids) it will be merrily working tomorrow :-D

Showmen, and I don't know about other travellers, don't do any washing on New Years Day because they believe they will wash away a member of their family if they do.

While you might feel that this is not such a bad idea, you don't get to choose which one!
